NEW ORLEANS (Vanessa Bolano / WGNO) ? A bunch of plastic surgeons are in town as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons convention gets underway at the Convention Center. One of the topics of conversation: quick alternatives to fight the aging process. It?s what one Metairie doctor has already mastered.

Why is it Hollywood?s A-listers like Tom Cruise, Ben Affleck, Julia Roberts, and Jennifer Aniston don?t seem to age? Is it that they?re turning to the newest, quickest, some would say easiest trend in plastic surgery?

?I like to think of it as the one hour virtual face lift because it?s not surgical,? says Board Certified dermatologist Dr. Diane Rose.

The Lunch Hour Facelift uses plenty of needles, but no general anesthesia.

Patient Kristin Samuelson says, ?I haven?t wanted to do anything extreme, but I have thought about something like this. Like getting a layer removed so I can see what?s under there because I know that?s what everyone talks about.?

Samuelson is one of many patients Dr. Rose sees for a little pick me up without the nip and tuck. She?s mastered the Lunch Hour Facelift which is usually a four step deal that starts with ridding wrinkles with Botox or neurotoxins.

The next step is to plump it up with filler that Dr. Rose says is applied, ?Usually in cheek area and chin area although sometimes right around the eyes.?

The third step is laser which can, ?Help tighten up the skin, tighten up pores, smooth out fine lines and soften wrinkles,? says Dr. Rose.

At this point your face is ready for Oxygenetix makeup which claims to heal as it conceals.

The Lunch Hour Facelift takes just about as long as it sounds, an hour. It?s customized for each patient and there?s virtually no downtime.

The procedure ranges from $1,000 to $1,800. It?s a fraction of the cost of a traditional facelift and well worth investment for Krisitin.

?I was starting to see the skin on either side right here getting, looking like the surface of the moon. I see that on old people not me. I?m never getting old!?

The results of lunch hour facelift last about a year.

Hello New here and need some advice.

I have been married to my husband for almost a year now. We have 3 children all from previous marriages. Things are going wonderful except the fact that he will not let me go out with my friends. If I do it has to be during the day and I have to tell him where I am and who I am with. I am not sure what would happen if I didnt tell him. Yesterday I was going to go to my friends house for lunch and he said he would of found out her address and came and got me if I wasnt home by a certain time. He has never been physical with me, he just gets loud. He always asks what I am doing during the day ect...if I want to go for a walk he has to go. I have never cheated on him so I have no idea where this is coming from. He was alittle bit like this when we were dating, if a guy came up to me in a bar, he would come right over and say he was with me and such. But never to this extreme. Will this just get worse? Anybody been through this? Is he just talking smack?

WPP PR, public affairs revenue down 1.7% in Q3 - PRWeek US

DUBLIN, IRELAND: WPP Group's PR and public affairs revenue fell 1.7% on a like-for-like basis to $366.3 million in the third quarter.

In the first nine months of the year, PR and public affairs revenue was down 0.1% on a like-for-like basis to $1.1 billion, compared with the same period of last year.

The holding company attributed the decline to lower revenue in North America, while the UK experienced ?strong growth? and Latin America and Africa saw double-digit like-for-like growth.

Iowa man loses dog to Humane Society mistake | WQAD.com ...

Stella (photo from WHO.com)

Stella (photo from WHO.com)

Boone, Iowa (WHO) ? A?little dog is causing a big battle in Boone, after she was mistakenly adopted.

Last month, Stella wandered away from home.? Her owner, Marc Riker,? called the Boone County Humane Society and reported the dog missing.? That was the last he heard from the agency until he spotted someone else walking Stella.? Instead of looking for Stella,? the Humane Society sold her to another family.

?You would think that the humane society would, if you call and give them a report of a lost pet and they tell you if they have any animals come in that meet the description, small white dog, they?ll get in contact with you, that would mean if a small white dog comes in that they?ll get in contact with you,? Riker said.

Jane Elsberry with the Boone Area Humane Society admits the agency made a mistake.

?During the time that this incident happened we were in a flux between staff and some of the staff were no longer there and so it just got lost in the shuffle,? she explains

The new owner is refusing to give Stella back.? Riker says he is considering legal action.? But with six children, he says, he doesn?t know how he?ll be able to afford a lawyer.

AP Exclusive: France to send drones to Mali region

PARIS (AP) ? France will move surveillance drones to West Africa and is holding secretive talks with U.S. officials in Paris this week as it seeks to steer international military action to help Mali's feeble government win back the northern part of the country from al-Qaida-linked rebels, The Associated Press has learned.

France and the United Nations insist any invasion of Mali's north must be led by African troops. But France, which has six hostages in Mali and has citizens who have joined al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, is playing an increasing role behind the scenes.

Many in the West fear that northeast Mali and the arid Sahel region could become the new Afghanistan, a no-man's-land where extremists can train, impose hardline Islamic law and plot terror attacks abroad. And France, former colonial ruler to countries across the Sahel, is a prime target.

"This is actually a major threat ? to French interests in the region, and to France itself," said Francois Heisbourg, an expert at the Foundation for Strategic Research, a partially state-funded think tank in Paris. "This is like Afghanistan 1996. This is like when Bin Laden found a place that was larger than France in which he could organize training camps, in which he could provide stable preparations for organizing far-flung terror attacks."

France is turning its attention to the Sahel just as it is accelerating its pullout of combat troops from Afghanistan ahead of other NATO allies.

A French defense official said Monday that France plans to move two surveillance drones to western Africa from Afghanistan by year-end, though he did not provide details. France is also reported to have special forces in the region around Mali, and to have contracted out surveillance of Mali to a private company.

Top-level American and French military leaders and diplomats, including U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson, began two days of talks in Paris on Monday on intelligence-gathering and security in the Sahel region, including Mali, diplomats from both sides told the AP.

The defense official and diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to talk publicly about the activities.

The Paris meetings follow a U.N. Security Council resolution that gives Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon about a month to help Malian authorities devise a plan to regain control of the north. And on Friday, African leaders met in Bamako, Mali's capital, to prepare a plan for a military intervention in the north, which was seized under the cover of a coup d'etat six months ago.

The United States is partnering with France, which has airpower and hundreds of troops across western Africa ? in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Chad and Gabon, French and U.S. officials said. The United States has no full-time military presence in Africa, but from time to time sends trainers or other advisers on specific missions, according to Africom, the U.S. military command for Africa based in Stuttgart, Germany.

The attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last month that left four Americans dead including the U.S. ambassador has fanned an increasing American awareness of the terror threat in the Sahel.

The United States sees France as a key player in Mali, and the French defense official said the U.S. "has conferred to us the role of leader" in the crisis.

Other Western powers are increasingly worried about a lawless Mali.

On Monday, Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Germany would be prepared to take part in a European mission to train and provide logistical support for Malian security forces. European Union members are considering a noncombat training mission to help the interim Malian government.

"Free democratic states cannot accept international terrorism gaining a safe refuge in the north of the country," Merkel told a German military conference near Berlin.

Yet despite the clear French interest in a Mali campaign, French officials don't want to be seen as too aggressive in helping Mali fight AQIM and its allies ? the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa, known as MUJAO, and Ansar Dine, which now controls the famed Malian city of Timbuktu.

French President Francois Hollande, his popularity flailing just five months since he took office, faces a variety of challenges.

First, he wants to free the hostages while quashing the group that holds them. His hardline stance is puzzling to some observers but suggests that larger geopolitical concerns may be holding sway over concern for the hostages.

Secondly, Hollande has just returned from a trip to Senegal and Congo, where he vowed a new, fairer French relationship with Africa. A more robust French military footprint could revive allegations of a long-despised colonialist mindset.

But France is also determined to prevent more kidnappings across Africa, where thousands of French expatriates live under the growing threat of terrorism.

And French authorities have long been concerned that home-grown Islamic militants could get training abroad, then come back to France to sow terror ? a fear borne out by at least two terrorism cases publicly announced this year.

On Friday, a high-level European diplomat told the AP that French authorities know that AQIM has French nationals as members, though the official didn't provide an estimate of how many.

"At this phase, it's not a very high number," the official said. "But if nothing happens on the ground, and AQIM continues to settle in in a durable way and get structure, it's clearly a number that's going to grow."

Whether or when an international intervention in Mali will come remains uncertain.

At a meeting on the Sahel at the United Nations last month, Hollande called for an African-led military intervention in Mali "as quickly as possible." Since then, he has reiterated that France won't provide any ground troops. His government has pledged logistical support, training, and intelligence-gathering to help back up African forces.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has said launching the operation is "a question of weeks," though the diplomatic official said that such a timetable was too hasty, and his comments were taken out of context. The main order of business for the French now, the diplomat said, is building consensus among the partners ? and ensuring that African countries take the leading role.

The idea would be intervention in northern Mali through a series of concentric circles: first by Malian government troops, then the ECOWAS alliance in western Africa, then possibly the broader African Union, and last a Western ? French, EU or American ? in a support role to fill any remaining gaps.

Mali government forces, which are run mostly by junior-level officers who staged the coup, are widely seen as incapable ? or unwilling ? to lead a military operation to recover control of the north.

In August, Mali's interim leaders announced a 31-minister government, including five seen as close to coup leader Capt. Amadou Sanogo, who nominally handed over power but still has not completely relinquished control.

Intelligence Online, which first reported about the French drone deployment, has reported that France has contracted Luxembourg-based CAE Aviation to monitor parts of north Mali and western Niger. A CAE Aviation executive didn't respond to phone messages and an e-mail from the AP seeking comment.

The United States has already expanded its Mali-related intelligence effort with satellite and spy flights over the north to track and map the rebels, U.S. officials have said.

The CIA is believed to use armed drones in places such as Pakistan and Yemen. The top-secret program is especially controversial in Pakistan, where residents view it as an affront to their sovereignty and contend that the drones frequently kill civilians, not just militants. France's military is not believed to have any armed drones.

PFT: 'Maybe we?ve just spoiled people,' Brady says

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll directs his team against the San Francisco 49ers during their NFL football game in San FranciscoReuters

Before the 49ers? Week Six game against the Giants, San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh lashed out at New York offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.? Harbaugh claimed that Gilbride?s complaint about 49ers defensive end Justin Smith holding offensive lineman was an ?outrageous, irrational statement? with a goal to ?both criticize and influence officiating.?

And so, after the Niners? Week Seven win over the Seahawks, Harbaugh complained about the extent to which Seattle defensive backs were making contact down the field with San Fran receivers, via a passive-aggressive request to the NFL for guidance as to what is and isn?t allowed.

On Monday, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll reminded Harbaugh of his prior words.

?Wasn?t it just a couple weeks ago when they were talking about not doing things like that?? Carroll told Brock & Salk on ESPN 710 in Seattle.? ?The Giants, Kevin Gilbride, or something like that?? You know, I thought there was something about that, you know?? Where we don?t go out and express our concerns and all.?

Carroll also addressed Harbaugh?s underlying concern.

?I think this was a very normal game for us in terms of how we played, and I?m surprised he felt like the receivers were so overwhelmed,? Carroll said.? ?I thought our guys did a good job.? There?s always gonna be some calls that you can look at.? But our guys played good, solid, hard football.? And, you know, Vernon Davis didn?t get the ball and their receivers didn?t do much, Randy [Moss] got one.? I?m sure there?s a little frustration on their part.?

Carrol thinks nothing will come of the request from Harbaugh.

?If the officials look at it, they won?t have anything to even look at,? Carroll said.? ?And I don?t think they even need to.? It?s a regular game.? Our penalties have really been going in the right direction, if you look at it. . . .? I don?t a guy should be able to speak out and go ahead and cause an investigation.? It?s too easy.? I don?t think it?s gonna happen.?

We don?t think it?ll happen, either.? But Harbaugh?s goal likely wasn?t to launch an investigation.? His goal was to both criticize and influence officiating in anticipation of the rematch between the two teams.

Kevin Gilbride would be proud.

Change Management: How to Safely Remove the Handcuffs on ...

At Monetate, we spend a lot of time talking about the democratization of creativity.

But, what does that mean (exactly)? Democracy, from the Greek d?mos kratos, literally refers to ?people power,? or providing the means to the masses to do what they want, where they want, and when they want.

As a one-time of student of government and international relations, I used to debate with my classmates whether democracy was always (and inherently) the preferred form of government.

Arguments in favor included the formation of a ?marketplace of ideas,? and the notion that such marketplaces drive innovation and improvement among the societies that practice it.

The arguments against? You might be surprised that they were somewhat similar. Democracies can be woefully inefficient, stagnant in their ability to execute, and ultimately put power in the hands of questionable groups and individuals. Side note: Benevolent dictatorships usually emerged (by consensus, naturally) as the preferred form of government.

But, so what of website optimization?

Historically, website optimization was a centralized practice?the domain of a few, the privileged (more accurately, the burdened) who wrote code and made changes to the production website to get such code into place.

For some organizations, however, such constraints seemed a blessing in disguise: They offered control, order, predictability, and a simple (if not cumbersome) workflow for success.

And the notion of democratizing, or removing, these constraints can seem a scary proposition?putting the power to change the website into the hands of, well, more than a privileged few.

Democracy Isn?t Anarchy

Still, countless organizations have navigated the challenges of democratization, and those considering it can count a few best practices from their forebears:

Use of Role-based Action Controls: Role-based access controls assign different privileges to different business users. Typically, such roles might include:

? Reporting access only
? Reporting access, plus campaign setup
? Reporting access, plus campaign setup and deployment

Workflow Tags: Campaigns have names (e.g., ?New Visitors Navigation Test?), but they should also utilize tags that indicate where, in the company?s own unique workflow, that campaign is. For example, if a campaign has been configured, but is awaiting your manager?s approval before being deployed, you can tag it with ?Waiting for {Name}?s Review? to streamline the process further.

An Orderly Transition to Democracy

As a student of government, you become fond of reading political cartoons. One in particular still resonates with me today. It showed soldiers boarding a cargo jet and was captioned, ?We Must Be Going to War. We Don?t Have Enough Firepower for Peacekeeping.?

It?s a reminder that the transition toward democracy, be it in government or website optimization, isn?t always easy. Recognize, though, that it doesn?t need to be difficult.

By putting in place a few simple rules, detailing roles and responsibilities, as well as a way to manage review processes, you?ll be primed for a smooth transition. As a reward, you?ll enjoy an optimization program that truly advances your business, rather than one that?s held back by it.

3-D-printed airplane takes to the skies

3 hrs.

3-D printers are already being used to create machine parts and small toys, but engineers have now used the technology?to build an entire vehicle: a plastic, unmanned airplane that actually flies.

The plane, created by engineering students at the University of Virginia (U.Va.), has a 6.5-foot wingspan, and was made from assembled printed parts.

The team tested their creation during four flights in August and early September at Milton Airfield near Keswick, Va. The aircraft, which is only the third 3-D-printed plane known to have been built and flown, achieved a cruising speed of 45 mph.

3-D printing?is already proving to be a valuable tool in teaching?students, said David Sheffler, an engineer at U.Va. who worked with students Steven Easter and Jonathan Turman to create the?aircraft.

[How 3D Printing Could Become Commonplace]

?To make a plastic turbofan engine to scale five years ago would have taken two years, at a cost of about $250,000,? Sheffler said in a statement. ?But with 3-D printing we designed and built it in four months for about $2,000. This opens up an arena of teaching that was not available before. It allows us to train engineers for the real challenges they will face in industry.?

Personal Training Business Workshop Brings Top Fitness Pros to ...

Fitness Consulting Group, parent company of personal trainer marketing website Fit Business Insider, will be hosting a fitness business workshop in three weeks, on November 10th.

Elizabethtown, KY (PRWEB) October 20, 2012

Fit Business Insider?s parent company Fitness Consulting Group will be hosting an

Elite Training Workshop

in three weeks, on November 10th at

Florida Fitness Coaches

in Naples, FL. This convention brings together top fitness industry leaders to share tips on growing a personal trainer business.

The workshop will provide hands on instruction geared toward both helping fitness businesses grow and improve their training techniques. The fitness experts plan to discuss a variety of topics concerning aspects of training and fitness marketing.

?All fitness entrepreneurs face two primary concerns,? says Nick Berry, Co-Owner of Fitness Consulting Group. ?The first is that they must develop a fitness niche to build their brand and the second is that they must continue to get better as trainers.?

Berry and his business partner Pat Rigsby have found their own fitness niche by helping personal trainers devise fitness business plans and creating effective fitness branding and personal training sales strategies.

Despite their continued devotion to fitness marketing strategies, Berry and Rigsby recognize that high quality personal training is just as important for securing clients in the long run. The Elite Training Workshop seeks to address both topics with presentations by fitness experts.

Dave Schmitz is one of the experts who will be on hand for the event. He specializes in resistance band training and frequently hosts training seminars and other live events to get trainers better at using bands. He was recently named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness.

Joining him will be President of Robertson Training Systems Mike Robertson, combat sport specialist Joel Jamieson, and the Smart Group Training team of Steve Long and Jared Woolever.

The fitness experts will be presenting on a wide variety of subjects, ranging from fitness-specific topics to business topics like how to use resistance bands in marketing and how to generate instant income.

The speakers hope that discussing their experiences can help other personal trainers with fitness marketing. ?These experienced trainers have a lot to teach,? Pat Rigsby explains. ?Both when it comes to training and how good trainers get their names out there.?

Nick Berry sums up the purpose of the event, saying that ?the goal of these presentations is not only to get trainers better at specific aspects of training, but to teach them how this training proficiency can help them expand their fitness brand.?

The Elite Training Workshop will be November 10th.

YouTube Campaigns lets nonprofits draw our interest without the telethons

Trying to launch a concerted nonprofit video campaign can feel like tilting at windmills: you might have one moment of undivided attention from viewers before they're off to watch cats and Nigerian pygmy goats. Google wants to make the most of that time through its YouTube Campaigns initiative. The strategy brings on-video overlays and channel sections that show viewers both a progress meter for the campaign as well as a handy links to explore and share what they've found. If all goes well, charities and like-minded organizations get more donations and YouTube views, while we in the general public are reminded that there's more to life than K-pop videos. It certainly beats manning the phones for a celebrity fundraiser.

These 50 Attempts at Speech in Classic Video Games Actually Sound Pretty Good

If you spent most of a mid-80s childhood planted in front of a video game console, a supercut created by the folks at Jest is about to cause a stirring audio flashback. It's a compilation of fifty clips featuring incredibly brief attempts at speech in classic video games. Given the limitations of the cartridges, the audio is still kind of impressive. More »

Some Information For Satellite TV Of Communications ...

Man-made satellite is placed into position just over 20,000 miles above the Earth. It is then programmed to orbit the Earth so that the satellite stays in synchronization with the Earth, specifically its rotation. So if you are living in United States, when a satellite that is positioned will stay over the United States, despite the Earths constant movement. Many satellites use rechargeable batteries as their power source, feeding off the Suns natural energy source via large solar panels.

The ability to receive and send broadcast signals using satellite technology increases the possibilities of gaining access to channels from other countries that utilize similar technology for broadcasting. So you are not restricted to the channels on cable networks. Then, each broadcasting station operates at a unique frequency that identifies the station to the FCC and allows your receiver to select a particular channel. After that, the radio waves are carried from the stations antenna to yours. And when tuned to the specific frequency, it will pick up the waves for your TV to interpret and project. However there are radio waves which can only travel so far when emitted from an antenna and they are then subject to distortion as objects getting in between the two points of communication. It takes the worry out of parents concerned at what their kids are watching while they are out. Most Satellite TV receivers are now able to block certain channels from a television set.

If you?re searching for the most television programs, the most high def programming, the most music channels, the most pay-per-view movies, plus the most world-wide channels at the cheapest price, the best satellite television deal is Dish Network?s. Nowadays, satellite TV is popular with every family, we can note the questions through dedicated servers hosting or buy domain name in domain shop. Satellite TV has the bright future with the right development.

Inaugural Global Green Inclusive Innovation Summit Aims to Empower

By Carol Dreibelbis

For the first time ever, governments, businesses, multilateral organizations, NGOs, academics, and investors will come together to discuss green, inclusive businesses at the Global Green Inclusive Innovation (G2i2) Summit. The G2i2 Summit will take place from October 25 to 26, 2012 at Infosys Technologies? campus in Bangalore, India. In the spirit of global participation, the Summit?s location will rotate around the globe in future years.

G2i2 Summit organizers hope to address climate change, reduce poverty, and improve the social impact of business. (Photo credit: www.g2i2summit.com)

The G2i2 Summit will focus on accelerating the spread of innovative green and inclusive businesses around the world. A ?green? business can be defined as one that demonstrates an explicit concern for the environment and does not negatively impact the local or global environment, community, or economy. A business is defined as ?inclusive? when it aims to benefit low-income or other disadvantaged communities; businesses do this by actively including these communities in the business process, whether through job creation, offering affordable goods and services, or other means. While green and inclusive businesses may be either for-profit or non-profit in nature, they ultimately aim to do good through business.

By bringing together representatives from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, the G2i2 Summit aims to both foster innovative green, inclusive business partnerships and match these partnerships with funders. According to the G2i2 Summit website, ?New green and inclusive businesses not only need desirable green products or guaranteed markets from companies; but also funding from public and private sector sources, social and infrastructure support from governments, on-going business and technical training from multi-laterals; and local market knowledge from NGOs and academia.?

The G2i2 Summit will feature keynote speeches by Mr. Jairam Ramesh, Honorable Minister for Rural Development of India; Professor Rajeev Gowda, chairperson of the Center for Public Policy at the Indian Institute of Management; and NS Raghavan, co-founder of Infosys Technologies, a global consulting and IT services company based in India. The agenda will also include special pitch sessions for green and inclusive businesses aiming to scale or replicate in India and around the world.

One concrete outcome of the G2i2 Summit will be the launch of several innovative, green and inclusive businesses related to sustainable food, clean energy, water, waste management, and health in the following target countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. Various companies, governments, and organizations are in support of this goal, including the UN Global Compact; multinational corporations Unilever, Novozymes, Nokia, and Greif; and the governments of the United States, Germany, South Africa, Sweden, and New Zealand.

By connecting companies and governments with complementary green, inclusive initiatives, G2i2 Summit organizers hope to address climate change, reduce poverty, and improve the social impact of business. Visit the G2i2 Summit website for more information.

How have you seen businesses have a positive impact on your community? Please share with us in the comments section.

Armstrong's foe says finding truth the No. 1 goal

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Even those who don't recognize his name will almost certainly know what Travis Tygart has been up to lately.

To put it simply, he's the man who's been making life difficult for Lance Armstrong.

Part teacher and part preacher for his cause, Tygart's official title is chief executive officer of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. He's a man who doles out lessons about playing fair while also trying to cajole confessions from those who don't.

His mission: Make sports a sanctuary for finding out which athlete is most talented and has worked the hardest, not who's the best cheater.

Most recently, that mission has led Tygart to spearhead the case that's ended Armstrong's cycling and triathlon careers. Only a year ago, that task seemed even more difficult than out-pedaling him in the Tour de France. Now, Armstrong has been cut loose by his major sponsors and is no longer the face of the Livestrong charity he founded.

As it turns out, the man who became Armstrong's greatest adversary is like him in some ways.

Both Armstrong and Tygart are 41. Like Armstrong, Tygart is in great shape and loves to get on the bike every once in a while.

And like Armstrong, Tygart has a stubborn streak in him. A big one.

"I saw at an early age that working hard is how you become successful," says Tygart, who learned his lessons about teamwork and sports growing up in Florida, where he was on state-championship baseball and basketball teams in high school.

"Playing sports as a kid, I learned all the valuable lessons that I think sports should teach. I'm determined to do everything possible to maintain those lessons for kids growing up."

Tygart has parlayed that credo into a career that, because of his role in taking down one of the world's most famous athletes, has made him among both the most trusted and reviled figures in sports ? even if only a small minority of sports fans would recognize him walking down the street.

"I always knew I wanted to do something that made a difference. It was never about anything other than trying to change the world for a better tomorrow," he says, a self-conscious laugh creeping in when he hears how much his words seem like a superhero's catchphrase.

If it all sounds a bit sanctimonious and too good to be true, well, his critics certainly won't argue. To them, he is a hatchet man who ran a witch hunt to settle an old score against Armstrong ? a foe who eluded sanctions for more than a decade.

"This isn't about Tygart wanting to clean up cycling," Armstrong wrote in a letter to The Associated Press, before USADA ordered his seven Tour de France titles stripped and before a massive report detailing the evidence against him was released. "Rather it's just a plain ol' selective prosecution that reeks of vendetta."

The case Tygart's agency produced included testimony from 11 former teammates of Armstrong's, along with 15 others, who teamed up to paint the picture of Armstrong as a drug-pushing bully. The report exposed what Tygart calls the most extensive doping program sports has ever seen.

On Wednesday, a week after USADA's documents were released, Armstrong left his post as chairman of his Livestrong foundation, the same day Nike announced it would sever ties with its longtime pitchman.

It was the latest in a steady drumbeat of bad news for Armstrong, all delivered ? either directly or indirectly ? courtesy of the agency Tygart has led since 2007 when his predecessor, Terry Madden, stepped down.

USADA was formed in 2000 as a way of taking drug cases that were decided by the U.S. Olympic Committee and placing them in the hands of a group that would be run independently. The agency is partially funded by the USOC and partially by the government. It runs on an annual budget of about $14 million and is tasked with finding and catching the drug cheats, spreading the message of clean sports and staying on top of the science in a business where the bad guys are always a step ahead.

As outside counsel, then general counsel, then CEO for USADA, Tygart has worked on every major doping case of the past decade, including the investigation into the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative, which showed how sophisticated the performance-enhancing drug game had grown and resulted in the prosecution of Barry Bonds.

Among those caught in USADA's net over the years: 2006 Tour de France winner Floyd Landis; Olympic gold medalists Marion Jones and Justin Gatlin; cyclist Tyler Hamilton; all the players listed in the Mitchell Report, which documented doping in baseball and which was put together with Tygart's input. All have had their accomplishments stripped or brought into question.

Through it all, Tygart insists he's treated the so-called celebrity athletes the same way he treats the unknowns ? the 40-something marathon runners and teenage in-line skaters who also fall under USADA's purview.

"He states his mission and his vision and you feel it," says Daniel Eichner, the former science director at USADA. "To him, it's all about protecting clean athletes. There's no other agenda."

Very few of the breakthroughs come easy for Tygart, a married father of three, avid skier, runner and, yes, cyclist, who on Tuesday celebrated his daughter's 11th birthday and also his 10th anniversary as a USADA employee.

He always loved the law but wanted some sort of sports connection and says when he sees injustice anywhere, "it's just infuriating, whether it's in sports or other areas of life."

Those who've known him for years say the message doesn't change once the necktie comes off.

"Travis is passionate about sport," said Rich Young, a partner at Bryan Cave LLP, who represents USADA as outside counsel and hired Tygart for that work in 2000. "He's a baseball and basketball player. He's got kids who are athletes. He really gets the difference between true sport and circus."

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Tygart comes from a family well-respected in the Florida law community. His brother and sister are lawyers. His father was a trial attorney who now works as a mediator. His uncle is a judge. After graduating with a philosophy degree from North Carolina, Tygart returned to Florida and taught high school government classes for three years, while also coaching baseball and basketball. From there, he went to Southern Methodist to get his law degree and begin the path toward becoming the single most powerful man in the U.S. anti-doping game.

Much has been made of death threats he received during the Armstrong investigation. Why does he keep on going?

"Because I've heard the stories from the athletes," he says. "I've heard them from the clean athletes who left their sport and felt personally robbed."

He thinks of lifelong friends such as T.R. Lewis, who had major league potential but never made it. Lewis came up during the 1990s ? the steroids era ? and got aced out by players he knew were using performance-enhancing drugs. He says looking at the Mitchell Report "is like someone leafing through their high school yearbook. It's all these guys I played with, played against."

"I don't mean to overstate my presence in the game, but I joke with Travis that, in some regard, I'm the poster boy for the players who got left behind," Lewis said.

And Tygart is their faithful servant.

The CEO said he was confused in February, when federal prosecutors abruptly decided not to charge Armstrong and drop a nearly two-year investigation. "You'll have to ask them why they shut down," is all he'll offer when pressed on the subject.

He was irritated when the feds refused to share their evidence with USADA, as had been customary in similar instances in the past.

Instead of quitting, Tygart hit the phones and revved back up on his own investigation. Unlike the feds, he did not need to tie Armstrong to criminal activity, much of which allegedly occurred in Europe. He needed to show that the cyclist broke the rules of sport.

Months later, Armstrong was charged under USADA's rules. The cyclist opted in August not to fight the accusations, still denying he used performance-enhancing drugs but saying the arbitration system was rigged against him.

Tygart went ahead and banned Armstrong from competition and ordered that race results back to 1998 be erased. Then his agency released its report on the case.

"At the end of the day, the truth is too powerful, whether it was this case or any other," Tygart said. "And at the end of the day, the truth was revealed."

Roasting Triassic heat exterminated tropical life

Some 249 million years ago, parts of Earth were so hot they were literally uninhabitable. The scorching temperatures directly led to an extinction event ? the only time this has happened in Earth's history. Many species were unable to survive in the tropics and could only cling on close to the poles.

"These were the hottest times the Earth's ever had since it cooled from a molten blob," says Paul Wignall of the University of Leeds, UK.

The extreme heatwave happened in the early Triassic period, when the first dinosaurs evolvedMovie Camera. Earth was recovering from the massive end-Permian extinction, which struck 252 million years ago and wiped out 80 to 90 per cent of species. Volcanic eruptions in what is now Siberia had lethal consequences, such as depriving the oceans of oxygen, and probably caused the extinction.

The global ecosystem was mysteriously slow to bounce back after the end-Permian extinction, Wignall says. "Normally things start to recover within tens or hundreds of thousands of years." Instead the "dead zone" lasted nearly 5 million years. "We've never known why."

Wignall and his colleagues used tooth-like fossils called conodonts to reconstruct temperatures in the early Triassic. The ratios of oxygen isotopes in structures like teeth and shells depend on temperature, so measuring these isotopes gives a good indication of climate.

Lethally hot

The team found that temperatures rose steadily for the 3 million years immediately after the end-Permian extinction, perhaps driven in part by a pulse of greenhouse gas emissions from the Siberian volcanic eruptions, and a lack of abundant plants to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Temperatures reached a peak 249 million years ago ? the time of the Smithian-Spathian extinction. This little-known event wiped out far fewer species than the end-Permian extinction, partly because there were so few left to kill.

At this time, sea surface temperatures in the tropics reached 40 ?C, while deeper waters were a few degrees cooler. Land temperatures fluctuate more than ocean temperatures, so they may have hit 50 ?C or even 60 ?C at times. "Tropical summers must have been lethally hot," Wignall says.

The extreme heat explains peculiar patterns in the fossil record, says Wignall. Large and physically mobile species, like fish, disappeared from the tropics but endured at the poles. Only small, immobile species like molluscs, which would have coped better with the heat, remained in the tropics. Much of the land was virtually devoid of plant life.

Temperatures were back to normal by 247 million years ago, at which point big, active animals returned to the tropics and plants recolonised the land.

Many mass extinctions coincided with global warming, but temperature itself was not the killing factor: related events, such as shifting ecosystems, were to blame. The Smithian-Spathian is the only known case where heat killed.

Overlooked mechanism

"Clearly, widespread heat death is an overlooked and understudied mechanism for mass extinction in Earth's history," says Matthew Huber of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. "Earth's biota may be vulnerable to very strong warming in the tropics." He adds that the results will need to be independently confirmed.

While the extreme temperatures of the Triassic are unlikely to be repeated, parts of Earth could nevertheless become uninhabitable for humans in the next few centuries. Extreme heat combined with humidity is fatal to humans, because sweating cannot cool us down. Huber has shown that lethally hot and humid conditions could spread over much of the tropics if global temperatures rise more than 7 ?C.

Alpha Centauri Has an Earth-Sized Planet

It's rather the same way the moon orbits the earth. If you have a binary system, a planet can quite happily orbit very close to one of the two stars so long as the distance between the planet and the star it orbits is smaller than the distance between stars. The pair of stars will orbit their mutual center of mass, and the planet will orbit a single star.

Of course, the three body problem is an open question in physics, but if you make the assumption that one of the masses is much smaller than the other two it (which is the case for planets orbiting stars) it becomes quite solvable, especially if you're happy with numerical simulations of orbits.

A similar situation is possible if the planet is a long way from the pair of stars, and would then orbit their center of mass. That isn't the case here, but is certainly a feasible solution to the problem. You only really get orbits that are highly erratic when the planets orbital radius is over a quarter of the distance between the stars.

Throughout this I've assumed equal mass stars. Feel free to put a factor of M1/M2 in front of every distance I gave for non-equal mass stars.
