HTC launches smartphone with revamped software to take on Samsung

LONDON (Reuters) - Taiwan's HTC Corp has unveiled the new smartphone that it hopes will set it apart from the crowd of Google Android devices on the market and help it to make up ground lost to Samsung.

The HTC One is powered by Google's software, but the company has distinguished it from rivals by using new software to replace icons on the home screen with a personalized stream of news articles, social networking updates, photos and video.

Chief executive Peter Chou told reporters in London that the BlinkFeed feature would reinvigorate the smartphone experience.

"BlinkFeed transforms your home screen into a live feed of information that matters to you," he said.

HTC was an early, and successful, maker of smartphones based on Android, but it has been eclipsed by the increasing dominance of Samsung in the Android market.

Android is widening its lead in smartphone operating systems, with devices running the software capturing nearly 70 percent of the market in the fourth quarter, Gartner said last week.

Apple is in second place with 21 percent, while Blackberry and Windows Phone, which Nokia is pinning its hopes on, trailed with 3.5 percent and 3 percent respectively.

HTC, however, has failed to capitalise on Android's dominance. Its share of mobile phone sales fell to 1.8 percent of the market last year, down from 2.4 percent in 2011, according to Gartner, and reported a 91 percent plunge in fourth-quarter net profit last month.

The company, which started as a contract manufacturer, has been outgunned in the marketing stakes by both Samsung, which Gartner said made more than 42 percent of Android smartphones in the fourth quarter, and Apple.

HTC launched its new device, which features a 4.7 inch screen and quad-core processor, days before the mobile phone industry's biggest gathering in Barcelona.

Analyst Julian Jest, of Informa Telecoms and Media, said that the new smartphone would help HTC to differentiate its brand from the typical Android offering.

"The introduction of HTC One has come at an ideal time - iPhone sales are slowing down and advanced users are now desperately looking for more innovative devices to satisfy their appetite to explore the new technology horizons," he said.

HTC said the device would be available in more than 80 countries from March.

Pressure mounts on Israel over Palestinian prisoner fast

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails declared a one-day fast on Tuesday in solidarity with four inmates whose hunger strike has fuelled anti-Israel protests in the occupied West Bank.

Samer al-Issawi, one of the four Palestinians who have been on hunger strike, has been refusing food, intermittently, for more than 200 days. His lawyer says his health has deteriorated.

Gaunt and using a wheelchair, Issawi appeared on Tuesday before a Jerusalem civil court, which deferred releasing him for at least another month.

The prisoners' campaign for better conditions and against detention without trial has touched off violent protests over the past several weeks outside an Israeli military prison and in West Bank towns.

In the Gaza Strip, the Islamic Jihad group said a truce with Israel that ended eight days of fighting in November could unravel if any hunger striker died.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club, which looks after the welfare of inmates and their families, said 800 prisoners were taking part in the daylong fast.

Issawi was among 1,027 jailed Palestinians freed by Israel in 2011 in exchange for Gilad Shalit, a soldier who was abducted on the Gaza border by Hamas, the Islamist militant group that now rules the enclave.

Issawi and Ayman Sharawneh, who has also been on hunger strike, are among 14 Palestinians who have been re-arrested by Israel since being released in the Shalit trade.

Ofir Gendelman, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, wrote on Twitter that Issawi and Sharawneh were detained "because they violated the terms of the Shalit deal by returning to illegal activities which pose a threat."

INTERNATIONAL CONCERN

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said he had been in contact with Israel and urged it to release the men. He said Egypt, which helped mediate the Shalit prisoner swap and also negotiated an end to a Palestinian mass hunger strike in Israeli jails last year, was trying to end the new protest.

Israel has defused previous long-term hunger strikes among the some 4,700 Palestinians in its jails by agreeing to release individuals or deporting them to Gaza - a prospect rejected by the four prisoners, who come from Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The Quartet of Middle East negotiators - the United States, Russia, the United Nations and European Union - and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon have expressed concern at the hunger strike.

Ban said on Tuesday that he had raised his concerns in a recent phone call with Netanyahu and that "those detained should be charged and face trial with judicial guarantees in accordance with international standards, or be promptly released."

In a statement on Monday, France's Foreign Ministry urged Israel "to be sensitive to the risk of a tragic outcome and to take appropriate measures as a matter of urgency."

The statement said "administrative detention must remain an exceptional measure of limited duration and be carried out with due regard for fundamental safeguards."

Israel holds some Palestinians in "administrative detention" based on evidence presented in a closed military court. It says the practice pre-empts militant attacks against it while keeping its counter-intelligence sources and tactics secret.

There were 178 administrative detainees in Israeli jails in January, down from just over 300 around the time of another Palestinian hunger strike campaign last spring, according to Palestinian rights group Addameer.

"The battle waged by me and by my heroic colleagues ... is everyone's battle, the battle of the Palestinian people against the occupation and its prisons," Issawi said in a message conveyed to the Palestinian Ministry of Prisoners last week.

Soccer-Iran off to a flying start in Asian Cup qualifiers

Feb 6 (Reuters) - Captain Javad Nekonam's hat-trick gave three-times champions Iran a rousing start in their Asian Cup 2015 qualifying campaign as they blanked 10-man Lebanon 5-0 in Tehran on Wednesday.

Kuwait also had an easy outing in the day's other Group B match as they beat Thailand 3-1 in Bangkok.

Naif Hazazi came off the bench to score a second-half winner for three-times champions Saudi Arabia in their clash at home against Jose Antonio Camacho-coached China.

In another Group C match, Iraq dominated against a defensive Indonesia at the neutral Al Rashid Stadium in Dubai but had to be content with a 1-0 victory.

The top two teams from each of the five qualifying groups and the best third-placed team will join defending champions Japan, hosts Australia, South Korea and North Korea in March 2015 for the next edition of the tournament.

Nekonam converted two penalties and added Iran's fifth and final goal while Standard Liege striker Reza Ghoochannejhad scored a brace to exact sweet revenge for the hosts' 1-0 loss to Lebanon last September in Beirut in a World Cup qualifier.

Coach Carlos Queiroz felt the margin of the win will boost the morale of the players who were under pressure having lost at home to Uzbekistan in November in another World Cup qualifier.

"I appreciate the effort from my players, they kept fighting and never gave up," the former Portugal and Real Madrid coach was quoted as saying by the AFC website (www.the-afc.com).

"We were able to highlight the gap between Iranian and Lebanese football.

"After we lost at home to Uzbekistan we needed to do something to relieve the pressure and we were able to beat Lebanon 5-0 which will alleviate the negative atmosphere."

In Group A, Jordan eased past hapless Singapore 4-0 at home while Oman had to dig deep to beat Syria 1-0 at home in Muscat.

Both Bahrain and Qatar scored twice in the second half to win their Group D matches by identical 2-0 margins against Yemen and Malaysia respectively.

In Group E, the United Arab Emirates carved out a 2-1 win over a fighting Vietnam side while Hong Kong, who played the last 30 minutes with 10 men, defended heroically to hold Uzbekistan 0-0 in Tashkent.

"I am satisfied with the result. We were unable to achieve a victory, but we achieved a good result," Hong Kong coach Kim Pan-gon said.

"I think we deserved the result. We had a little luck as they hit the crossbar, but we played good football even though we had a player sent off in the second half."

Out-of-form Saudi Arabia, who last month sacked coach Frank Rijkaard after the team failed to make it past the group stage of the Gulf Cup of Nations, got the much-needed win after Hazazi turned in a cross from Al Ittihad team mate Al Muwallad.

Fahad Al Muwallad had opened the scoring for the hosts, who have also failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, but Zhao Xuri restored parity for China before the break. (Reporting by Sudipto Ganguly in Mumbai; editing by Pritha Sarkar)

Lungs of the planet reveal their true sensitivity to global warming

Feb. 6, 2013 ? Tropical rainforests are often called the "lungs of the planet" because they generally draw in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. But the amount of carbon dioxide that rainforests absorb, or produce, varies hugely with year-to-year variations in the climate. In a paper published online Feb 6 2013 by the journal Nature, a team of climate scientists from the University of Exeter, the Met Office-Hadley Centre and the NERC Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, has shown that these variations reveal how vulnerable the rainforest is to climate change.

Lead author Professor Peter Cox of the University of Exeter explained: "We have been struggling for more than a decade to answer the question 'will the Amazon forest die back under climate change?' Our study indicates that the risk is low if climate change is associated with increased plant growth under elevated carbon dioxide. But if this effect declines, or climate warming occurs due to something other than a carbon dioxide increase, we expect to see a significant release of carbon from tropical ecosystems."

The study reveals a new way to find out how sensitive biological systems are to changes in climate. The key was to learn how to read the year-to-year variations in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide increases each year as a result of burning fossil fuels and deforestation. But the amount it goes up from one year to the next depends on whether tropical forests are absorbing carbon dioxide or releasing it -- and this in turn depends on whether the tropical climate was warmer and dryer than usual, or wetter and cooler. So the trace of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere holds a record of how the lungs of the planet respond when the climate warms or cools.

The team studied how these year-to-year variations in carbon dioxide concentration relate to long-term changes in the amount of carbon stored in tropical rainforests. They found that climate models that predicted tropical forest dieback under climate change also had a very large year-to-year variation in carbon dioxide concentration, while models in which the rainforest was more robust to climate change had more realistic year-to-year variation in carbon dioxide concentration.

By combining this relationship with the year-to-year variation in carbon dioxide as seen in the real world, the team were able to determine that about 50 billion tonnes of carbon would be released for each degree Celsius of warming in the tropics. Peter Cox said the findings were initially a relief: "Fortunately, this carbon release is counteracted by the positive effects of carbon dioxide fertilisation on plant growth under most scenarios of the 21st century, so that overall forests are expected to continue to accumulate carbon."

The researchers are however certain that tropical forests will suffer under climate change if carbon dioxide doesn't fertilise tree growth as strongly as climate models suggest.

Co-author, Chris Jones, of the Met Office said: "The long-term health of tropical forests will depend on their ability to withstand multiple pressures from changing climate and deforestation. Our research has shed light on the former, but the latter remains a significant pressure on this ecosystem."

Monopoly fans vote to toss 1 token, add new piece

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) ? The end is near for the shoe, wheelbarrow or iron in the classic Monopoly game as fans vote Tuesday in the final hours of a contest to determine which token to eliminate and which piece to replace it with.

The eight tokens identify the players and have changed quite a lot since Parker Brothers bought the game from its original designer in 1935. The latest changes mark the first time that fans have had a say on which piece to add and which one to toss.

The voting on Facebook is scheduled to close just before midnight Tuesday. Pawtucket-based toy maker Hasbro Inc. will announce the new piece Wednesday morning.

So far, the wheelbarrow, shoe and iron are neck and neck for elimination through the Save Your Token Campaign. The new addition will be a robot, diamond ring, cat, helicopter or guitar.

Fans from more than 120 countries have voted.

The online contest to change the tokens was sparked by chatter on Facebook, where Monopoly has more than 10 million fans.

Monopoly's iconic tokens originated when the niece of game creator Charles Darrow suggested using charms from a charm bracelet for tokens. The real-estate trading game is based on the streets of Atlantic City, N.J., and has sold more than 275 million games worldwide.

The eight tokens are an iron, racecar, Scottie dog, a shoe, thimble, top hat, wheelbarrow and battleship. Most of the pieces were introduced with the first Parker Brothers iteration of the game in 1935, and the Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s.

Versions of Monopoly with the new token will come out later this year.

Cancer worse for blacks, American Cancer Society says | The ...

?I actually have taken care of patients here who are dying of breast cancer,? said Byrd, a hospice nurse and administrator at University Hos?pice who was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2009.

Though she is doing well, many black cancer patients fare worse than their white counterparts and suffer higher rates of death, the American Cancer Society reported Tuesday.

The group said cancer death rates are declining for blacks as cancer death rates overall are going down. The death rate is declining fastest among black men at 2.4 percent per year vs. 1.7 percent a year for white men, the report found,

Death rate declines are about the same for white and black women, and the relative decline since 1991 for both sexes means about 200,000 lives were saved through improved screening and treatment, the group found.

Overall, blacks fare worse than whites for most cancers at every stage of diagnosis, the report found. It is particularly striking in breast cancer: White women have a slightly higher rate of getting breast cancer, but black women?s death rate is 41 percentage points higher than whites.

Black women are much more likely to be diagnosed with advanced disease, a higher grade of tumor and cancer that has spread to a distant site.

While mammography rates are similar, 51 percent of breast cancers in blacks have not spread when they are discovered vs. 61 percent for whites, the report found. Black women were more likely to go longer between screenings and get less timely follow-up on suspicious results. They are also more likely to have aggressive tumors, particularly in younger women.

That was the case for Byrd, who found her lump in the shower five months after getting a clean mammogram.

?Now, I could have said, ?I?m clean and I can wait until my next mammogram,? and not check,? she said. ?I might not have been here now if I had waited until the next mammogram.?

Even with her quick action, the cancer had already spread to the nearby lymph nodes. She got radiation and chemotherapy and was able to receive Herceptin, a more targeted treatment. Black women, particularly younger women, are more likely to have cancers that are not hormone-sensitive and that do not yet have well-targeted treatments, and thus worse outcomes.

Byrd, about to turn 52 this month, said her job has helped her come to grips with what could have been.

?I know the end result if the cancer comes back and if it has spread everywhere because those are the patients we take care of here,? she said. ?Once all treatment options are exhausted, hospice is the next step, which is a wonderful program.?

Byrd also volunteers for the American Cancer Society to work with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. In both ways, Byrd said, she is answering a calling.

?I know that God has given me the strength to do that because it is not strength of my own, to be able to have a diagnosis of cancer and then talk to people who are dying from the cancer and then people who are newly diagnosed,? she said. ?I know that he is using me in a mighty way to get the education out and to help people. To see me as a witness, a living testimony that you can make it through.?

South Africa police arrest alleged M23 rebels

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Police in South Africa say they've arrested 19 alleged members of the Congo rebel group M23 on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government there.

The South African Police Service issued a statement Tuesday announcing the arrests, but offered few details other than to say their "objective is believed to be to overthrow the current government" of Congo. The statement said the alleged rebels would appear in court later Tuesday.

Brig. Lindela Mashigo, a police spokesman, could not be immediately reached for comment.

The M23, an armed group said to be backed by Rwanda, is currently in the process of beginning negotiations with the Congolese government. The rebels briefly held and later withdrew from Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in eastern Congo, last year.

In Massachusetts, All Eyes on Tagg Romney

This is how troubling Republican prospects look in the upcoming Massachusetts Senate special election: The most viable candidate may end up being a Romney.

Tagg Romney, the oldest son of Mitt Romney, is considering running to fill the Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State John Kerry, The Boston Herald reports.

It would be difficult for Tagg to distance himself from his father's political legacy, particularly since he was actively involved in his father?s campaign. Despite serving as Massachusetts governor for one term, Mitt Romney didn?t fare well in his home state in the 2012 presidential election, losing Massachusetts by 23 points. And he left the Governor's Mansion with weak marks, with his approval rating at?34 percent?in a Boston Globe poll conducted the October before he left office.

While the Romney brand isn't particularly strong anymore in Massachusetts, Tagg Romney boasts the name recognition and money needed to combat Democrats in the June special election. Reps. Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch are both running in the Democratic primary.

Republicans had been hopeful they could flip Kerry's seat, as long as former Republican Sen. Scott Brown ran. GOP leaders tried to recruit Brown, but he announced Friday he will sit the race out. After that announcement, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Executive Director Guy Cecil tweeted:

Meanwhile, over the weekend, other credible GOP candidates announced they will take a pass. Former Gov. William Weld also said in a brief statement Monday that he won?t be running. Richard Tisei, who nearly ousted Democratic Rep. John Tierney, announced Saturday that he was sitting this one out. And The Boston Herald reported Saturday that?Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, who served as Romney's lieutenant governor, was "unlikely to run."

Energy industry develops nontoxic fracking fluids

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? The oil and gas industry is trying to ease environmental concerns by developing nontoxic fluids for the drilling process known as fracking, but it's not clear whether the new product will be widely embraced by drilling companies.

Houston-based energy giant Halliburton Inc. has developed a product called CleanStim, which uses only food-industry ingredients. Other companies have developed nontoxic fluids as well.

"Halliburton is in the business to provide solutions to our customers," said production manager Nicholas Gardiner. "Those solutions have to include ways to reduce the safety or environmental concerns that the public might have."

Environmental groups say they welcome the development but still have questions.

The chemicals in fracking fluids aren't the only environmental concern, said George Jugovic, president of PennFuture. He said there is also concern about the large volumes of naturally occurring but exceptionally salty wastewater and air pollution.

It's premature to say whether it will ever be feasible to have fluids for fracking that are totally nontoxic, said Scott Anderson, a senior adviser for the Environmental Defense Fund.

"But we are encouraged to some extent by recent industry efforts to at least reduce the toxicity," Anderson said.

Fracking, short for hydraulic fracturing, has made it possible to tap into energy reserves across the nation but also has raised concerns about pollution, since large volumes of water, along with sand and hazardous chemicals, are injected deep into the ground to free the oil and gas from rock.

Regulators contend that overall, water and air pollution problems are rare, but environmental groups and some scientists say there hasn't been enough research on those issues. The industry and many federal and state officials say the practice is safe when done properly, but faulty wells and accidents have caused problems.

Halliburton says CleanStim will provide "an extra margin of safety to people, animals and the environment in the unlikely occurrence of an incident" at a drilling site.

Gardiner said Halliburton has developed a chemistry-scoring system for the fluids, with lower scores being better. CleanStim has a zero score, he said, and is "relatively more expensive" than many traditional fracking fluids.

Both Jugovic and Anderson noted that one of the most highly publicized concerns about toxic fracking fluids hasn't really been an issue: the suggestion that they might migrate from thousands of feet underground, up to drinking water aquifers.

"Most people agree there are no confirmed cases so far" of fracking chemicals migrating up to drinking water, Anderson said. But he added that simple spills of fluid on the surface can cause problems.

"The most likely of exposure is not from the fracking itself. It is from spills before the fracking fluid is injected," Anderson said.

There also may be technical and cost issues that limit the acceptance of products such as CleanStim. There is tremendous variation in the type of shale rock in different parts of the country. For example, drillers use different fluids even within the same state, and the specific mix can play a large role in determining how productive a well is.

Gardiner wouldn't say how widely used CleanStim is. "The customers who do use it certainly like the material," he added.

Terry Engelder, a geologist at Penn State University, said he visited a well in that state last year that used just water, sand and three additives in the fracking fluid.

But Engelder added that "green" and "toxic" can be "soft words without real meaning." He noted that consumers, businesses and farms use vast quantities of chemicals that can contribute to pollution, from cleaners and soaps to fertilizers and pesticides. Yet all those compounds are routinely flushed down the drain, ending up in nearby rivers and streams.

"Eventually industry would like to end up with a mix of just water, sand, and food-grade additives," Engelder said of fracking. "Companies are learning to deal with fewer and fewer additives."

REAL FUN TO COME

The NFL's best have been mingling with celebrities, signing autographs for adoring fans and enjoying all the festivities New Orleans has to offer during Super Bowl weekend. But make no mistake, they'd gladly give that all up.

They'd rather be on the field at the Superdome on Sunday.

Case in point, what New York Giants Eli Manning told Nekesa Mumbi Moody, AP's global lifestyles and entertainment editor, on Saturday:

"I'm not enjoying it as much," he said.

Manning spent Saturday with his dad Archie and brother Peyton, first watching a celebrity flag football game featuring A-listers including Lil Wayne, Snoop Dog, Katharine McPhee, Deion Sanders, Neil Patrick Harris and more. The family then went to the "2nd Annual NFL Honors" awards Saturday night, where Peyton Manning won AP's NFL Comeback Player of the Year award during a show televised on CBS. The younger Manning said he likes being back in New Orleans, back where he grew up.

But this time last year, he was one night away from winning a Super Bowl and being crowned the game's MVP.

Where would you rather be?

"I'd rather be right now in the hotel room, looking at my playbook, trying to figure out how to win another championship," Eli Manning said.

1 HARBAUGH FAMILY WIN

The Harbaugh family got an early win on Saturday night well before the Super Bowl.

Tom Crean, coach of the No. 3 Indiana men's basketball team, knocked off No. 1 Michigan 81-73 at home. Crean is married to Joani Harbaugh, sister of San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

It's the third time in school history the Hoosiers have beaten the No. 1 team at home. When the new AP Top 25 poll comes out Monday, Indiana will likely take back the No. 1 ranking it held for the first seven weeks this season.

The Harbaugh family will finish the weekend with a 2-1 record.

5 KEY PLAYERS: SAN FRANCISCO

We asked AP pro football writer Barry Wilner to pick five key players for each team in this Super Bowl. You'll want to pay attention to these guys on Sunday.

For the Baltimore Ravens, it's Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, Ray Lewis, Paul Kruger and Cary Williams. Now, for the San Francisco 49ers:

Kaepernick, Crabtree, Gore, Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis

?COLIN KAEPERNICK (QB, JERSEY NO. 7): Dynamic player who replaced injured Alex Smith in November and kept the job. Fast with long strides, strong arm, unafraid to throw into tight spots.

?MICHAEL CRABTREE (WR, JERSEY NO. 15): Matured this season and became a true No. 1 receiver. Led team with 85 catches, 1,105 yards and nine TDs. Good after catch, but needs to consider better ball security.

?FRANK GORE (RB, JERSEY NO. 21): Career rushing leader for franchise, as dependable as they come. Strong, can pound through line, but also has quick feet to cut to open space. Had 1,214 rushing yards and eight TDs during season.

?ALDON SMITH (OLB, JERSEY NO. 99): All-Pro sacks machine. Not as good as he needs to be in coverage, but is raw. Then again, why not rush him every play? Great burst off the line, big wingspan and maneuverability.

?PATRICK WILLIS (ILB, JERSEY NO. 52): With apologies to Ray Lewis, Willis is best linebacker in this Super Bowl ? and probably best in entire league. Has been All-Pro in five of six seasons.

BROTHERLY ADVICE: THE MANNINGS

Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh and San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh are hardly the only high-profile siblings who've squared off in their arena of expertise. The AP is asking some others who can relate how to handle going against a family member in the Super Bowl.

When NFL quarterbacks Eli and Peyton Manning squared off during a regular season game, at least one parent didn't have too hard a time deciding who to root for.

"I knew my mom was going to root for me ? I'm the baby of the family, so that was an easy one," Eli Manning said.

But sibling battles can be tough on parents, the New York Giants quarterback said.

"It's hard to be excited for one child winning a game and also disappointed for the other one that didn't," he said.

As for the Harbaugh brothers: "I think they're just both trying to figure out how to get a win."

Eli's brother Peyton Manning says the Harbaughs have handled the week well, knowing one brother will be happy Sunday night while the other will be disappointed.

"Neither would be in this game if they weren't excellent coaches and no matter what happens tomorrow night, they're still excellent coaches. That's just a matter of fact," Peyton Manning said.

AWARDS OVER, TIME TO PARTY

Now that the NFL awards have ben doled out, it's time to bring on the celebrity-studded parties on Super Bowl eve.

? Justin Timberlake takes stage for his first concert in more than four years during "DIRECTV Super Saturday Night." It's invitation only.

FANTASY CONSIDERATIONS

Many of the millions of Americans who play fantasy football will be watching Sunday's Super Bowl with an eye toward next season's drafts.

But as one fantasy expert warns, don't put too much stock into what you see in the game ? good or bad.

Matthew Berry, an ESPN fantasy analyst nicknamed "The Talented Mr. Roto," said there will be some interesting players on the field from a fantasy perspective, including 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Baltimore wide receiver Torrey Smith and San Francisco wide receiver Michael Crabtree.

But barring major injury, fantasy owners shouldn't get caught up in how they perform in New Orleans, Berry said.

"I think fantasy owners are smart enough and savvy enough to know that the postseason is something different and it's a very small sample size," Berry says.

Simply put, it takes more games than a Super Bowl to judge whether someone's fantasy worthy.

But if you thought you could be sneaky and nab Kaepernick or Crabtree with a late draft pick next season, think again. The duo's performance throughout the last half of the regular season and the postseason mean they'll go in higher rounds, Berry says.

QUICKQUOTE: AP'S MVP SPEECH

Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson thanked God, his parents, teammates and coaches for propelling him to the Associated Press 2012 NFL Most Valuable Player award.

And he wants to win the hardware again.

"God willing, next year I'll be accepting this award again. Trying to get two or three like Peyton (Manning). Trying to get to your level ... But I won't be there to accept it because I'll be winning with my coach, the most important award, the team award, the Super Bowl."

STAT OF THE DAY: HALF DON'T CARE WHO WINS

This Super Bowl stat of the day comes by way of Jennifer Agiesta, AP's director of polling: A Seton Hall poll shows 53 percent of Americans don't care who wins on Sunday.

The Seton Hall Sports Poll, conducted Jan. 28-30, shows 26 percent of people rooting for the San Francisco 49ers and 21 percent rooting for the Baltimore Ravens.

One-third of Americans plan to skip Sunday's game.

The poll of 894 randomly selected adults has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.

AP TOPS PEYTON FOR MVP

Minnesota's Adrian Peterson is the NFL's Most Valuable Player as selected by an Associated Press vote.

The running back coming back from major knee surgery beat out Denver quarterback Peyton Manning on Saturday night.

It's Peterson's second award of the night after winning Offensive Player of the Year.

Peterson led the Vikings from a 3-13 mark to 10-6 and a wild-card playoff berth. He is the first running back to win MVP since LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006.

___

PEYTON'S COMEBACK

NFL fans everywhere wondered if Peyton Manning could come back from four neck surgeries after 13 years in Indianapolis without missing a game.

Now he's AP's 2012 NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

Manning sat out 2011, then made Denver one of the league's top teams, guiding the Broncos to the AFC's best record at 13-3.

Manning received 31? votes Saturday from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league. He easily beat Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who got 17? votes.

QUICKQUOTE: RG3

One year in the NFL and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is already an award winner.

He took home AP's NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors on Saturday night and promptly warned the league he plans to improve.

"It's truly a blessing to be up there ? to be able to stand, first and foremost," said Griffin, who underwent knee surgery last month.

Next season, "you'll see a better Robert Griffin," he said.

___

PETERSON OFFENSIVE POY

Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson went from major knee surgery to dominating voting in The Associated Press 2012 NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.

It helps that he rushed for 2,109 yards, 9 short of Eric Dickerson's record.

Peterson had 36 of 50 votes; Denver quarterback Peyton Manning had eight.

Peterson scored 12 touchdowns rushing and averaged 6.0 yards per carry.

___

INTERIM TO TOP

Bruce Arians is the first interim coach to win the top NFL award from The Associated Press.

He won 2012 Coach of the Year honors Saturday night for his work with the Indianapolis Colts. Arians now is head coach in Arizona.

Arians took charge of the Colts in late September after head coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia. The Colts, 2-14 the previous season, went 9-3 under Arians and made the playoffs.

Pagano coached the final game of the regular season and a wild-card playoff match.

Arians earned 36? votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. Pagano finished second with 5?.

___

KUECHLY WINS DEFENSIVE ROY

Linebacker Luke Kuechly of Carolina has won the Associated Press 2012 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Kuechly, a first-round pick from Boston College, led the league with 164 tackles.

FIRED UP

Here's one way to spend your 37th birthday: Flag burning.

That's how Mike Libber of Baltimore showed his loyalty to the Ravens during Friday night festivities on Bourbon Street in New Orleans' French Quarter.

Libber and his friends filled the long but thin balcony at the Voodoo Vibe bar, and asked bar employees to remove a San Francisco 49ers flag dangling next to a Ravens flag.

"Yeah, take that away," Libber said. "Otherwise, I'll burn it. In fact, let me burn it."

Libber eventually scrounged up $60 from his friends and bought the San Francisco flag from a bar manager.

He took it out onto Bourbon Street and began to set it on fire. It didn't quickly light up.

A crowd gathered, some 49ers fans booed. Moments later, with a small part of the flag burning, New Orleans police officers arrived and stopped the shenanigans.

7 TO HALL, INCLUDING PARCELLS

The Pro Football Hall of Fame will have seven new members.

Coach Bill Parcells, Warren Sapp, Cris Carter, Jonathan Ogden and Larry Allen have all made it to the 2013 class. So have two senior selections, Curley Culp and Dave Robinson.

Five players were eliminated in the final vote: Jerome Bettis, Charles Haley, Andre Reed, Michael Strahan and Aeneas Williams.

Earlier Saturday, the selection committee eliminated Tim Brown, Kevin Greene, Will Shields and former owners Edward DeBartolo Jr. and Art Modell.

49ERS WALKTHROUGH

The next time the 49ers step onto the field at the Superdome, it'll be time for the Super Bowl.

San Francisco finished up on-field preparations on Saturday with a 15-minute walkthrough. The team has meetings Saturday night.

Coach Jim Harbaugh said the stadium lights are brighter than they were when the 49ers beat the New Orleans Saints here on Nov. 25, so getting his players adjusted to that was important.

Harbaugh invited family members and friends ? 11 busloads of people ? to attend the short session and come down to the field to pose for photographs.

One person hollered Harbaugh's signature chant from the stands: "Who's got it better than us?"

The rest of the group replied: "No-body!"

The coach smiled.

RAVENS DONE PRACTICING

Baltimore is done practicing on the field for the Super Bowl.

Team officials, friends and family watched as the Ravens went through a short walkthrough at the Superdome on Saturday afternoon.

The 15-minute session was more of a pep rally than a workout.

Running back Ray Rice playfully tackled his mother on the sideline and guard Marshal Yanda had a video camera attached to the top of his Ravens cap.

John Harbaugh describes his team's work this week as "effective."

"We've gotten everything we've needed to get done, that's the No. 1 thing," Harbaugh said.

___

GLORY, PLUS CASH

The Super Bowl isn't just about the glory ? players for San Francisco and Baltimore both have decent paydays riding on the outcome.

The difference between winning and losing is $44,000, nearly $9,000 less than the median annual household income in the United States from 2007-2011, according to U.S. Census data.

Winning players get $88,000 each, losers get $44,000. That's just cash ? it doesn't count the marketing clout gained by going from NFL player to Super Bowl champion.

Super Bowl paydays have gradually increased the last 30 years after doubling in 1983 to $36,000 for winners.

In the game's first 11 years, winners got $15,000 and losers got $7,500.

MACKIE COLD ON NY GAME

Add Anthony Mackie to the list of people cold on next year's Super Bowl at the home stadium of New York's teams.

Though the "Gangster Squad" actor now lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., he's from New Orleans and thinks a city like his hometown should get the Super Bowl every year.

Mackie said Friday night at an ESPN Magazine party that he doesn't want to sit outside in 30 degree weather and watch the Super Bowl.

"I want to see the girls in their pretty dresses; I want to hang out with the players. I don't want to be outside in the cold in New Jersey," he continued, stressing that Met Life Stadium, where both the New York Giants and Jets play, is actually in East Rutherford, N.J. "You're not in New York. I have to take a bus from Manhattan all the way to Jersey?"

Though Mackie's Saints didn't make it to the Super Bowl this year, Mackie is still passionate about who he wants to win ? the Baltimore Ravens.

"I will do everything to not see San Francisco win another Super Bowl," he said, hoping for a bit of karma.

LEAVING HIS MARK

If there are some dents in the Superdome roof, blame San Francisco 49ers punter Andy Lee.

Lee bonked several punts off the roof this week as the 49ers practiced for Sunday's Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens. Lee finally lowered the trajectory of his kicks to make sure he got the ball downfield.

"I'm glad he didn't hit those lights," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said.

PLAYING FOOTBALL, NOT FUTBOL, IN MEXICO

The NFL wants to return to Mexico, though Commissioner Roger Goodell won't say when.

Back in 2005, Azteca Stadium in Mexico City was the site of the league's first regular-season game outside the United States. But the league hasn't been back, despite playing in Toronto and ? now regularly ? in London.

Goodell says the league is perfecting things in England.

"We have to make sure that whenever we do come back to Mexico, and I expect we will, that we do it successfully, with the right kind of television support, fan support and sponsor involvement," Goodell said.

"I would expect if we are successful in the UK, where we thankfully are continuing to grow, that we'll have the opportunity to get back there," Goodell said. "And the sooner, the better for me."

Tom O'Neil: Lincoln's Oscar quest: It's all about Steven Spielberg (and, well, maybe Kathleen Kennedy)

Years ago Variety editor Peter Bart shared with me a fascinating Oscar insight. In order to win Best Picture, he said, a movie must conjure up a person who Academy members are rooting for. In other words, the film with the best face behind the title wins. Thus The Departed (2006) and The Hurt Locker (2009) won because voters wanted to give hugs to Marty Scorsese and Kathryn Bigelow. This year, according to that theory, Argo may be surging ahead because Hollywood is cheering on poor Oscar-snubbed Ben Affleck, who, after years in the industry's trenches, has finally emerged as a major filmmaker.

But what about Lincoln? Who comes immediately to mind when voters think about the movie that leads this derby with the most nominations? Maybe Daniel Day-Lewis? Maybe Steven Spielberg? The correct answer should really be Spielberg -- it's his story and it's not properly reverberating across Oscarland. Think about what the dramatic success of Lincoln means: It represents the spectacular career comeback of a man who reigns as king of Hollywood filmmakers.

2013-02-02-Spielberg2.jpg
Imagine this poster plastering the billboards and bus stops along Sunset Blvd. (if only DreamWorks/Disney had the guts to post them): "Spielberg's baaaaack! Lincoln = $170 million box office! 'Masterpiece' (NY Times) ... Most Academy Award Nominations! Now ... let's give Steven that overdue Best Picture Oscar."

While the King of Hollywood Filmmakers has won two Academy Awards for Best Director (Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan), he's only snagged Best Picture once (Schindler's List). That's criminal when you compare him to other directors whose movies have reaped Best Picture twice: Milos Forman (Amadeus, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) and Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby, Unforgiven).

Crucial to the Peter Bart Oscar Best Picture Theory is that the person behind the film title should be engaged in a compelling quest. Think Marty Scorsese being criminally overdue to win. Or Kathryn Bigelow representing the face of all womanhood being shockingly snubbed, too. In Bigelow's case, it helped that she even had a nifty second quest: revenge against her ego-mad ex-husband James Cameron, who competed against her little indie The Hurt Locker with his monster megahit Avatar.

Spielberg has two quests too: his overdue second Best Picture award and a chunk of Academy gold needed to hail his big career comeback, but these quests aren't being trumpeted across Hollywood by his studio because, frankly... they're embarrassing. Take the comeback angle, for example. It's not like Spielberg is recovering from a big career crash. It's just that he hasn't had such spectacular critical/commercial/awards success as Lincoln since Schindler's List (1993). War Horse was a disappointment when compared to early expectations, but it still got nominated for Best Picture last year (Spielberg got snubbed in the directors' lineup). His previous serious film was Munich (2005) which got nommed for five Oscars, including Best Picture and Director (it lost to Crash and he lost the helmer's laurels to Brokeback Mountain's Ang Lee).

But, wait -- maybe then the Lincoln story, the Lincoln quest, the person we should think of behind the title of that film isn't really Spielberg at all. Maybe it should really be his producing partner Kathleen Kennedy, who is holding a giant Oscar I.O.U. She's lost Best Picture six times: War Horse (2011), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), Munich (2005), Seabiscuit (2003), The Sixth Sense (1999), The Color Purple (1995), and E.T. (1982).

Now THAT's a worthy quest -- and one involving a deserving female no less. So maybe we should rip up those Spielberg posters dreamt up for Sunset Blvd. and reimagine them as Kennedy ones, saying, "Ask not what the Oscars can do for you .... Ask what you can do to get Kennedy her elusive Oscar!"

See the latest predictions of 25 top Oscar experts in the races for Best Picture and Best Director. See those prophesies are translated into rankings and racetrack odds when the predictions are combined.

Ask Engadget: best email phone?

Ask Engadget best email phone

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Arthur, who has asked one of the most dangerous questions it's possible to ask the internet. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I'm out of contract, and my employer is offering me a company phone of my choice. I'm currently using a BlackBerry Bold 9700 and I handle a lot of e-mails on any given day. What phone would you recommend for someone who needs to send and receive plenty of emails during travel and downtime? I'm not tied to an ecosystem and I don't care about app libraries or anything else -- I just need the best email phone on the market. Please help me!"

What a question! Your first concern should be comfortable typing and if it'll play well with your work server. If you're wedded to a physical keyboard, then you should probably wait for the BlackBerry Q10. If not, then Windows Phone's keyboard is pretty good, but the added real estate offered by the Galaxy Note 2 might be more your scene. What do you think, friends? Give the man some options by filling in the comments below.

The Nobel-Prize-winning physicist made renewables a centerpiece of his tenure. But while surges in wind and solar installations garnered praise from Democrats, Republicans excoriated the Obama administration when clean-energy investments backfired. ?

In a lengthy resignation memo to his staff, Mr. Chu?ticked off what he counts as the department's accomplishments under his lead: increased investment in?high-risk, high-reward energy technology development; a doubling in?production of clean, renewable energy from wind and solar; and more than $90 billion in?Recovery Act loans to green energy companies.

When Solyndra, a solar panel manufacturer backed by?$535 million in federal loan guarantees, filed for bankruptcy in 2011, critics of investments in private energy firms pounced. Chu downplayed the incident, saying that only 1 percent of the?more than 1,300 companies funded by DOE Recovery Act funds went bankrupt.?
