Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner

Once you slide into the post-Thanksgiving food coma, the idea of reprising the meal loses just a bit of its luster. After a round of turkey-and-cranberry sandwiches on Black Friday, the remaining leftovers ? and yes, there are bound to be some ? look even less appealing.

We?ve had a few bright ideas?for repurposing Thanksgiving leftovers.

This year, we asked chefs, food bloggers and other experts for their best recipes to reinvent Thanksgiving leftovers. Six to try:

Candied Sweet Potato Soda

Portland restaurant The Original Dinerant makes this unique drink from scratch using sweet potatoes, marshmallows and other ingredients. You can also use leftover candied sweet potatoes in lieu of sweet potatoes.

Blend in a mixer, and then strain.?To make soda, add soda water to taste to three ounces of the puree. For a hot toddy, add an ounce of bourbon and hot water to taste.

Turkey Shepard?s Pie

?It?s one of my favorite leftover Turkey dishes besides the humble warm turkey sandwich, says Jason McLeod, executive chef of Consortium Holdings, whose San Diego, Calif., properties include Craft & Commerce, Neighborhood and Underbelly.

Start by shredding leftover turkey meat.?Chop leftover vegetables. Heat the turkey and vegetables in a large pot. Add leftover gravy and mix well.

Add your choice of seasoning ? McLeod uses chipotle powder, garlic powder and onion powder. Place the mix in casserole dish and cover with leftover mashed potatoes.

Bake in oven at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes. Serve with leftover cranberry sauce.

Basic Turkey Jerky

If you have a dehydrator, turn leftover turkey into a dried snack with this recipe from Excalibur Dehydrators.

Coat thin strips of turkey with a little olive oil and a few seasonings to taste.?Place strips on the dehydrator tray, making sure that they do not touch each other.

Set the temperature for 140 degrees. Cook 6 to 12 hours, checking hourly until the inside of a slice has no moisture at all and is the same color throughout.

Thanksgiving Eggs Benedict

Sullivan?s Steakhouse?in Austin, Texas, turns leftover turkey into a brunch standby.

To make, set aside two to four slices of turkey, a scoop of stuffing and an ounce or two of gravy per person. Heat each component in a microwave until?warm.

Split an English muffin per person and then toast. Scoop stuffing on top?of each side of the English muffin.?Top stuffing with slices of reheated turkey.

Bring two cups of water and a teaspoon white vinegar to a simmer in a small saucepot. Crack two?eggs, then drop into the simmering water and poach for 2-4 minutes.

Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel. Set an egg on top of each muffin half.

Ladle gravy over each poached egg.?Spoon a little cranberry sauce on the plate.

Candied Yam Bread Pudding

No pumpkin pie left? No problem. Chef Derek Simcik, executive chef of Chicago?s Atwood Caf?, makes a dessert from leftover sweet potatoes and bread.

First, butter a deep pan. Tear 12 ounces of leftover bread into chunks and place in a large bowl. Pour a quart of heavy cream over the bread and set aside until soft.

Beat three eggs and five ounces sugar until smooth and thick. Add a half-ounce of vanilla, an ounce of melted butter, and two ounces of brandy.

Gently toss together the egg mixture, the bread and four to five ounces of candied yams. Pour into pan and bake at 350 until browned and almost set, about 45 minutes.

Thanksgiving Monte Cristo

?For a lighter version, pan fry this recipe instead of deep-frying,? says Katherine Humphus, executive chef of BO-beau kitchen + bar and100 Wines Hillcrest in San Diego, Calif.

To make, form two patties out of leftover stuffing, with gravy mixed in for moisture. Make a sandwich using the stuffing patties as ?bread,? placing turkey, mashed potatoes and some green bean casserole in between.

Close patties around the filling. Bread each with flour and egg. Deep fry until golden brown and hot in the center, and enjoy with side of cranberry sauce.

Illinois Draws $346K from Video Gambling in First Month ? CBS St ...

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Two or three times a week, Linda Baker drops by the Bowl Inn in her central Illinois hometown, hoping to strike it rich by plunking pennies and nickels into new video gaming machines.

Baker, the disabled Jacksonville woman in her 60s, has been lucky, figuring she?s $75 to $100 ahead. Exactly how cash-strapped Illinois? fortunes shake out with the state?s long-awaited gambling expansion remain to be seen, though the first numbers appear to illustrate the wagering option?s popularity ? at least for now.

A new Illinois Gaming Board report this week shows video gambling statewide brought in more than $346,000 last month, which is when the bulk of the machines went live. That?s more than three years after lawmakers approved them to help fund a $31 billion push to fix schools, roads and bridges, despite strong opposition from gambling critics.

October?s take came from nearly $18 million in wagers at 714 machines, placed in everywhere from truck stops to bowling alleys to veterans? halls. Local governments received nearly $70,000, according to the report.

State officials have had high revenue hopes for the new gaming, estimating when lawmakers first signed off on broadened gambling in 2009 that the machines ? in addition to existing casinos and horse tracks ? would raise $375 million a year. Updated projections haven?t been released, and a message Tuesday with the state?s gaming regulators wasn?t returned.

As officials estimate that up to 75,000 machines could be installed statewide within a year, businesses such as Jacksonville?s 60-year-old Bowl Inn appear to be welcoming the draw.

?They?re performing real good,? said David White, who manages the 12-lane bowling alley where five video gaming terminals were installed a month and a half ago. ?I?m seeing people come in here that I haven?t had here before.?

His establishment?s machines drew $484,000 in bets, the report showed, with the state getting some $7,200 and the municipality more than $1,400.

But what happens to that demand as the novelty of video gaming ebbs and more machines are fired up isn?t clear.

?It?s been pretty much an unknown, and it?s still an unknown,? shrugged White, who has tried to maintain his customers? interest by treating video-gaming players like they were at casinos, ?making sure they have everything they need ? like tea, coffee and water? ? all on the house.

Baker relishes that, no longer having to make a 90-minute drive to St. Louis to find the nearest casino.

?I can stay here in town and play them now,? putting in $5 worth of coins at a time, she said. ?I don?t know about anyone else, but I?ve won more than I?ve paid in. And if a machine?s not playing very good, I just move to another.?

In the Mississippi River city of Alton, Ill., Terry Strader?s Riverbend Billiards may have a disadvantage in offering video gaming. Tucked squarely in the St. Louis-area casino market, Alton long has had a riverboat casino ? the Alton Belle ? virtually in the pool hall?s backyard.

Yet the business? five machines still drew $205,000 in activity last month.

?We?re pleased with the way it?s been going, but we have no idea what to expect. It?s just too early to tell,? said Strader. He believes part of video gambling?s allure at his pool hall is that players don?t have to do it at the local casino, where they might have to deal with crowds and park far away.

?No one knows where it?s going ? if (demand now) is high or low. With anything new, you don?t know in what part of the spectrum you?ll be when the dust settles.

?Every little bit helps.?

Reiki Classes For Children | Holistic Health & Me

Written by Magdalena Thiel

In 2007 when I learned Reiki I knew in my heart that I had to teach it. ?I thought that it could be the solution to the world?s problems. ?If only everyone could learn and incorporate it into their lives, it would bring peace to the world.

Reiki is a healing energy that comes from Spirit into us, and is channeled through our hands to wherever/whomever we intend to send it. ?This energy feels like being filled with waves of love, it is very gentle and relaxing and it helps to balance the body/mind and spirit, bringing that way whatever that person is ready to receive at the moment and always for the greatest and highest good.

Reiki stands for everything that is Love; it teaches allowance and trust in a Higher Intelligence, but must of all it made me feel so much peace. ?It has taught me to get out of my own way and believe that Spirit knows what is really needed.

Having grown in a very conservative Catholic family, I was getting into uncharted territory, trying something that was so different. ?What I learned through the process is that it really is not that different, Reiki made me feel so much closer to Spirit and so much respect for life? I learned about giving and receiving, and how it can help in our relations with everything and everyone.

At the time my children were 8 and 10 years old. ?They both enjoyed receiving it. ?It was for them that I organized my first ?Reiki for Kids? class. ?I had been teaching it to adults for a while and knew that it had to be done differently in order to keep them engaged and having fun!

I was in for an incredible experience! ?The kids knew this loving energy in their hearts. ?They understood it and didn?t really need so many ?words? as we adults do. ?They embraced it immediately!

So that summer, I created a class for 6 kids at my home, where they would learn first and second degree Reiki in a week?.

During class they learned about the history of Reiki and about Dr. Usui. ?We talked about the principles and each gave examples of how they apply them in their lives. ?The attunements were done individually in a separate room. ?They took turns while they waited doing art work. ?Chakras and colors were easy for them, as we made up a game to learn them. ?They finger-painted the symbols in huge rolls of paper while focusing on how they perceived each energy. ?They practiced the mental/emotional healing on each other as they provided feedback to their partner.

Long distance Reiki was a lot of fun too. ?They brought pictures and stuffed animals. ?They also created a Reiki box as a project, where they painted, cut and pasted, and then we dedicated them, so that whenever they gave Reiki to the box, they knew they were sending Reiki to whatever o whomever they had inside the box, like pictures and names of family members and friends.

We used every opportunity throughout out class days to practice. ?They gave Reiki to plants and connected with their energy fields. ?They gave Reiki to my Labrador while she fell into a complete and? blissful sleep. ?They chose crystals from my collection, charged them, learned what their properties are, and learned how they could be used for healing. ?They also gave Reiki to their food and water to bring out the very best in them.

They learned how to give a proper session. ?These were very short and there was a lot of conversation going on. ?It was all about what they were experiencing in the moment and how good it was to be able to help someone else at the same time they received the energy themselves. ?It made them feel empowered and connected to God.

What I loved the must was seeing them practice on each other. ?Five kids around the Reiki table standing in different places and trusting their intuition and what their hands were telling them, knowing that whatever way they chose to do it would be just perfect.

In my experience as a mother and Reiki Master, Reiki is a tool that all kids could benefit from. ?It empowers them, making? them confident that they can handle a stomach ache or a bandaged knee.? It teaches them how to relax so they can handle situations in a more balanced? matter. ?It teaches them the power of their thoughts and their intentions so they can direct them in a positive way.

Israeli government websites under mass hacking attack

18 hrs.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - More than 44 million hacking attempts have been made on Israeli government websites since Wednesday when Israel began its Gaza air strikes, the government said on Sunday.?

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said just one hacking attempt was successful on a site he did not want to name, but it was up and running after 10 minutes of downtime.?

Typically, there are a few hundred hacking attempts a day on Israeli sites, the ministry said.?

Attempts on defense-related sites have been the highest, while 10 million attempts have been made on the site of Israel's president, 7 million on the Foreign Ministry and 3 million on the site of the prime minister.?

A ministry spokesman said while the attacks have come from around the world, most have been from Israel and the Palestinian territories.?

"The ministry's computer division will continue to block the millions of cyber attacks," Steinitz said. "We are enjoying the fruits of our investment in recent years in developing computerized defense systems."?

Steinitz has instructed his ministry to operate in emergency mode to counter attempts to undermine government sites.?

Both sides in the Gaza conflict, but particularly Israel, are embracing the social media as one of their tools of warfare. The Israeli Defense Force has established a presence on nearly every platform available while Palestinian militants are active on Twitter.?

"The war is taking place on three fronts. The first is physical, the second is on the world of social networks and the third is cyber," said Carmela Avner, Israel's chief information officer.?

Last month, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said cyberspace is the battlefield of the future, with attackers already going after banks and other financial systems. U.S. banks have been under sustained attack by suspected Iranian hackers thought to be responding to economic sanctions aimed at forcing Tehran to negotiate over its nuclear program.

Archduke Joseph Diamond fetches record $21.5M

(AP) ? Christie's auctioned off the Archduke Joseph Diamond for nearly $21.5 million Tuesday night, a world auction record price per carat for a colorless diamond.

The Archduke Joseph Diamond was the first of two out-of-this world diamonds being auctioned off this week in Geneva. Sotheby's on Wednesday will auction what it calls an exceptionally rare fancy deep blue briolette diamond of 10.48 carats expected to get up to $4.5 million.

Christie's kicked off Geneva's jewelry auctions, held in five-star hotels along the Swiss city's elegant lakefront, that seem a continent if not a world away from the grim austerity gripping much of Europe.

The Archduke Joseph Diamond went for $21,474,525 including commission at Christie's auction. That was well above the expected $15 million and more than triple the price paid for it at auction almost two decades ago. The 76.02-carat diamond, with perfect color and internally flawless clarity, came from the ancient Golconda mines in India.

The seller, Alfredo J. Molina, chairman of California-based jeweler Black, Starr & Frost, said immediately afterward that there were two main bidders and that he was delighted with the result. Molina said the winning bidder, who wished to remain anonymous, is going to donate the diamond for display at a museum.

"It's a great price for a stone of this quality," Molina told The Associated Press. "It's one of a kind, so it's like saying 'Are you pleased when you sell the Mona Lisa?' Or 'Are you pleased when you sell the Hope Diamond?' It's all what the market will bear, and the stone sold for a very serious price."

Named for Archduke Joseph August of Austria, the great-grandson of both a Holy Roman emperor and a French king, the diamond passed to his son, Archduke Joseph Francis, who put it in a bank vault, then to an anonymous buyer who kept it in a safe during World War II. From there it surfaced at a London auction in 1961, then at a Geneva auction in 1993, when Christie's sold it for $6.5 million.

It wasn't the only mega-diamond to go under the hammer at Tuesday's auction in the hotel room packed with well-heeled bidders. Beneath a row of three enormous chandeliers that cast panther-like shadows on the ceiling, the participants eagerly pounced at the jewels while competing with bidders from around the world calling in to Christie's employees seated in rows on both sides of the room.

But perhaps the buyers weren't entirely immune to the harsh financial climate in Europe ? or at least some Geneva version of it. Two plus-sized diamonds did not sell Tuesday night. A yellow diamond with 70.19 carats failed to sell because the final bid was 2.8 million Swiss francs, just slightly below the reserve price. A 12.16 carat pink diamond didn't sell because the final bid was 1.8 million francs, well under the reserve price.

On Wednesday, in addition to the blue briolette diamond, Sotheby's also is putting on the block a conch pearl, enamel and diamond Cartier bracelet that formerly belonged to Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain that's expected to sell for up to $1.4 million.

The Archduke Joseph Diamond joins a long list of other fabulous jewels, watches and other luxury goods sold in Geneva. Here's a look at the city's most eye-popping diamonds put up for auction in recent years:

ROYAL CONNECTIONS

In May 2012, Sotheby's sold the 34.98 carat Beau Sancy diamond to an anonymous bidder for $9.7 million. Marie de Medici had worn it at her coronation as Queen Consort of Henry IV in France in 1610. Then the diamond passed among the royal families in France, England, the Netherlands and Prussia. It was sold by the Royal House of Prussia.

Sotheby's also sold for $3.87 million the Murat Tiara, a pearl-and-diamond tiara created for the marriage of a prince whose ancestors included the husband of Caroline Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister. Christie's auctioned off a 32.08-carat Burmese ruby and diamond ring that sold for $6.7 million, a world record price for a ruby sold at auction.

PEAR-SHAPED

In November 2011, the Sun-Drop Diamond of South Africa, a giant pear-shaped yellow gem weighing 110.3 carats, sold for more than $10.9 million at auction, beating previous records for a jewel of its type. Including commission, the unidentified telephone bidder paid almost $12.4 million for the gem. Other lots at the $70 million sale included a white cushion-shaped diamond weighing 38.88 carats that sold for almost $7 million, including commission.

HEART-SHAPED

In May 2011, Christie's fetched $10.9 million for a 56-carat heart-shaped diamond that was internally flawless and $7.1 million for a 130-carat Burmese sapphire. Sotheby's got $12.7 million for a rare emerald-and-diamond tiara that a fabulously wealthy German prince, Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck, commissioned for his second, Russian-born wife around 1900. An intensely pink 11-carat diamond from the mines of India sold for $10.8 million.

INTENSELY PINK

In November 2010, a rare pink diamond smashed the world record for a jewel at auction, selling for more than $46 million to well-known London jeweler Laurence Graff. Four bidders competed for the pink diamond, which was last sold 60 years earlier by New York jeweler Harry Winston. The seller chose to remain anonymous. The 24.78-carat "fancy intense pink" diamond immediately became known as "The Graff Pink."

China helps shares stabilize but U.S., Greek woes persist

LONDON (Reuters) - World shares stabilized on Monday after three straight sessions of losses as firmer Chinese data helped to offset concerns about a possible U.S. fiscal crisis and delays to an installment of Greek aid.

The data showing Chinese exports picked up sharply in October, signaling the giant economy was gathering strength, gave investors some encouragement. However, this was partly undermined by Japan, which reported its economy had shrunk 0.9 percent in third quarter, and was heading into a mild recession.

The MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus> was down just 0.04 percent at 322.15 points by 1300 GMT following the three days of losses last week, and U.S. stock index futures pointed to a modestly firmer start on Wall Street.<.n/>

"Any bit of positive news from China will swing things upward here," said Oliver Purshe, president at Gary Goldberg Financial Services in Suffern, New York. "There's a little bit of pent-up desire to bounce back today."

The S&P 500 futures contract and the Nasdaq 100 futures were up 0.35 percent, while the Dow Jones futures were up 0.3 percent.

However, gains were likely to be limited due to the looming budget crisis in Washington. "Investors remain consumed by U.S. fiscal cliff consequences, and this is capping market enthusiasm," said Tim Waterer, senior trader at CMC Markets.

With the U.S. bond market closed for the Veterans Day holiday and euro zone finance ministers gathering in Brussels to discuss the Greek bailout programme, activity for the remainder of the day was expected to be light.

In Europe the FTSEurofirst 300 Index <.fteu3> was flat at 1,096.80 by the midsession, steadying after last week's 1.6 percent drop. London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> traded between 0.1 percent up and 0.3 percent higher. <.l><.eu/>

The foreign exchange market was focused on the Eurogroup meeting which will not be authorizing another installment of money for Greece on Monday, but could agree to give Athens two more years to meet the goals needed to release the funds.

Pressure for a deal on Greece is growing because Athens has to redeem 5 billion euros' ($6.35 billion) worth of treasury bills this week and had been counting on cash from the next aid tranche to help cover that.

The euro was virtually flat at $1.2715 before the meeting, near a two-month low of $1.2690 struck on Friday, with little gain seen coming from Sunday's approval by the Greek parliament of a tough 2013 budget.

"The key issue will be what comes out of the Eurogroup meeting. If the tranche is released, it is positive for risk and we should see a reasonable bounce in the euro, given the pessimism that's been built into the markets about the euro area," said Raghav Subbarao, FX strategist at Barclays.

However, many people in the market had low expectations for what could emerge from the meeting. "I think we've seen too many finance ministers' meetings over the course of the last two or three years to have any great expectations," Peter Dixon, global equities economist at Commerzbank, said.

Any rise in the common currency could be short-lived as data this week is expected to show a slowdown in German economic growth and France slipping into recession.

The uncertainty over the Greek aid talks and the U.S. budget supported German government bonds, with 10-year yields steady at 1.35 percent.

European credit markets were also flat with the iTraxx main index, made up of 125 investment-grade bonds, 0.4 basis points wider at 131 basis points.

CLIFF FACE

Since the U.S. elections, investors have worried that the return of the status quo in Washington will make it difficult for lawmakers to reach the compromises needed to avoid the "fiscal cliff" at the end of the year, when nearly $600 billion worth of spending cuts and tax increases begin.

President Barack Obama was due to begin meetings with labor, business and civic leaders to find support for his plans to resolve the crisis this week, before talks with Congressional leaders who return to Washington after the holiday weekend.

The dollar pushed up to near a two-month high against a basket of currencies <.dxy> as the concerns about the budget dispute encouraged investors to move into the safe-haven currency. Speculators favored the dollar in the latest week for the first time since early September, according to data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

But the yen took its share of the demand and one dollar bought 79.44 yen on Monday, unchanged from Friday when the U.S. currency fell to its weakest in nearly three weeks.

In the oil market worries about the danger of the United States, the world's top oil consumer, tipping into recession as a result of the fiscal cliff and the weak Japanese data were checked by the strong Chinese trade numbers.

Brent crude oil futures rose 5 cents to $109.45 by 1230 GMT, after gaining more than 2 percent on Friday. U.S. oil was up 7 cents at $86.14 after finishing up more than 1 percent last week to end a three-week slide.

Gold added 0.29 percent to $1,736.01, holding near a 3-week high around $1,738 on Friday and well above a 2-month low around $1,672 hit last week.

Eldercare Resource Center: Financial and Other Assistance to Help ...

We have been meaning to review veterans' option for assisted living, home care and nursing homes for some time now. Just in time for Veterans' Day, we have published our Veterans Guide to Paying for Long Term Care. In this guide, we look at all the financial assistance options available specifically for veterans in all areas of aging care regardless of the source of funding.

The majority of assistance comes from the Veterans Administration but surprisingly not all of it from VA Health Care or VA Medical Benefits. Veterans Home and Community Based Services, Veterans Pensions, supplemental insurance benefits for military retirees and other grant programs can help to offset the out-of-pocket costs of caring for an aging loved one who served this country. In addition to these programs, there are several forms of assistance specifically for veterans from non-governmental organizations. Non-profits also have programs whose benefits are intended to help US Veterans.

The organization of our Guide is intended to direct individuals by need. If a veteran is seeking residential care, the types of assistance are organized according to the type of residential care they require. If the individual is seeking home care, assistance is structured for the different types of home care. There is also a section on areas of assistance not provided by health care professionals or family caregivers. This includes the available options that help pay for durable or home medical equipment and assistive technologies that can reduce the veteran's dependence on others. Lastly, is the area of home modifications to account for service-related disabilities and other disabilities or physical challenges associated with aging.

China says 18-year-old Tibetan self-immolates

(AP) ? An 18-year-old Tibetan villager died after setting himself on fire in northwest China in the latest of a half-dozen such self-immolations reported during the past week as the country's communist leadership undergoes a once-a-decade transfer of power.

A short report from the state-run Xinhua News Agency did not offer a reason why the man self-immolated Saturday, but dozens of ethnic Tibetans have set themselves on fire in heavily Tibetan regions over more than a year and a half to protest Chinese rule.

Overseas groups that report on most of the self-immolations had said at least five ethnic Tibetans set themselves on fire earlier in the week in protests aimed as a signal to the Communist Party elite as they meet in Beijing in a pivotal, weeklong congress that opened Thursday.

On Friday, hundreds of Tibetans, mostly high school students, demonstrated in a town that sits at the edge of the Tibetan plateau in western Qinghai province, calling for Tibetan independence and the return from exile of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

Saturday's immolation took place in the afternoon in front of a monastery in the city of Hezuo in the Tibetan autonomous prefecture of Gannan, Xinhua said, citing provincial government sources.

The man has been identified as Gonpo Tsering from the city's Lexiu township and further investigations are under way, Xinhua said.

Overseas activist groups had no immediate information on Saturday's incident, and police in Hezuo declined to comment. Calls to Hezuo's city government and to authorities and police in Gannan prefecture rang unanswered Sunday.

In Beijing on Friday, Tibetan Communist Party officials attending the party congress told reporters they believed much of the blame for the spate of self-immolations fell on the Dalai Lama and his associates, whom they said were instigating the protests.

"The external Tibetan forces and the Dalai clique are sacrificing other people's lives to attain their secret political motives," Lobsang Gyaincain, the Chinese-appointed vice governor of Tibet, told reporters.

The Dalai Lama has said he opposes all violence and says the self-immolations are a symptom of the desperation and frustration felt by Tibetans living under the Chinese government's hardline policies in the region, including its tight restrictions on religious life.

Ex-oilman named new Archbishop of Canterbury

LONDON (Reuters) - A former oil executive was named leader of the world's 80 million Anglicans on Friday, ending months of closed-door intrigue as the church struggles with bitter rifts over women bishops and gay marriage.

Justin Welby, 56, has been bishop of the northern English city of Durham for barely a year and will replace the liberal incumbent Rowan Williams as archbishop of Canterbury in December.

Welby is against gay marriage but favours the ordination of women as bishops.

Liberal clerics in the United States and Britain are at odds with conservatives in Africa and elsewhere over such issues, and Welby is likely to come under intense pressure to prevent the church tearing itself apart.

His appointment as the 105th archbishop caps a meteoric rise in the Church of England hierarchy since he quit the oil business and was ordained a priest in 1992.

The bespectacled and soft-spoken Welby accepted the appointment at London's Lambeth Palace, the official London residence of the archbishop of Canterbury for 800 years.

He said the job offer had been a daunting one. "My initial reaction was, 'oh no'," a smiling Welby told reporters in a room adorned with portraits of former archbishops and gold chandeliers.

"It's something I never expected. And the last few weeks have been a rather strange experience, to put it mildly."

The long-awaited announcement, made by Prime Minister David Cameron's office, follows weeks of intense speculation that a row over whether to choose a reformer or a safe pair of hands had stalled the nomination process.

"Well this is the best-kept secret since the last cabinet reshuffle," Welby told an audience that included his wife, five children and a baby grand-daughter, after opening his address with a brief prayer.

He has said the death of his infant daughter in a 1983 car crash brought him closer to God.

Speaking with the sleeves of his dog-collared clerical shirt rolled up to the elbows, Welby stressed that he wanted to be defined by his faith rather than his background - he attended Eton, the same elite British school as Cameron.

After a stint at French oil firm Elf Aquitaine, Welby worked as finance director at Enterprise Oil. But in his acceptance speech, he appeared wary of too much emphasis being placed on his former career.

"The key thing is the sense of having lived and worked in a world where the church was felt by many people to be completely irrelevant and how that attitude made you think round what it means to be Christian," he said.

ETONIAN URBANITY

Welby's handling of the issues of gay marriage and women's ordinations as bishops is set to define his tenure.

Commentators said his schooling, financial expertise and extensive conflict resolution work in Nigeria and elsewhere will have furnished him with the tough negotiation skills needed to heal the deep rifts in the church.

"I suspect he has that urbanity and confidence that you often associate with Old Etonians," said Richard Coles, an Anglican parish priest and broadcaster.

"He's worked at a high level that's not marked by sentimentality and gentleness, so I think he's also a player."

Cameron said Welby's corporate experience would stand him in good stead in the new role.

"Having someone who had a life outside the church in business, who understands difficult, complicated issues, will bring a great breath of fresh air to the Church of England," Cameron said, according to the BBC.

In his speech, Welby chose his words carefully when addressing the issue of gay marriage, highlighting the need for respectful dialogue. "We must have no truck with any form of homophobia, in any part of the church," he said.

He won praise from the liberal camp by saying he would vote to allow the ordination of women as bishops at a crucial assembly later this month that is the culmination of over 10 years of debate.

"I am thrilled," said Christina Rees, a former chairman of advocacy group Women and the Church and member of the General Synod, the legislative body of the church.

"To hear the new archbishop of Canterbury saying 10 days before the vote: 'I am strongly in favour', is really going to positively influence the vote," Rees said.

After his speech, the archbishop-to-be smiled widely as he posed for photographs at the imposing entrance to Lambeth Palace, across the river from the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. He will be formally enthroned as archbishop next year.

"All archbishops of Canterbury get eaten alive by their own kind," said Coles.

"Whether or not Welby survives, remains to be seen."

Waffle House CEO demanded sex acts, woman alleges

1 day

A former female employee has filed a police complaint alleging the CEO of Waffle House demanded she perform sexual acts on him in exchange for keeping her job.

The woman told Atlanta police the alleged harassment by Joseph Rogers Jr. lasted for nearly 10 years, from 2003 through June of this year. The Associated Press does not identify alleged victims of sexual harassment.

David Cohen, who identified himself as a lawyer representing the woman, told the AP that the man cited in the police report is the CEO of Waffle House, a company based in metro Atlanta. And the home address given for Rogers in the police report matches that listed on the Federal Election Commission's website alongside donations the CEO made to unsuccessful presidential candidate Mitt Romney in June 2011 and May of this year.

Police would not confirm that the Joseph Rogers Jr. cited in their report is the CEO. They said Thursday that they are investigating the allegations, but no charges have been filed. A lawyer for Rogers did not return a telephone call and email from the AP on Thursday.

The police report quotes the woman as saying that Rogers tried to force her to have sex with him despite her repeated protests. She said that he also touched her breasts, tried to remove her clothes, made lewd comments, and insisted she perform sex acts on him at least once or twice a month. The woman, who identified herself as a single mother, told police she stayed in the job and endured the alleged harassment because she couldn't find other employment with comparable pay. She said she gave Rogers a letter of resignation in June after her son secured a full college scholarship.

The woman filed her complaint after walking into an Atlanta police precinct about midnight on Sept. 28, according to the police report. Cohen said he couldn't comment further on the case because of a judge's order.

The Marietta Daily Journal reported that Rogers sued the woman in Cobb County Superior Court on Sept. 14, but that the documents had been sealed and both sides agreed not to speak to the news media. The newspaper added that the woman filed a lawsuit against Rogers in Fulton County State Court on Sept. 19, but documents in that case were also sealed.

Robert Ingram, whom the newspaper identified as a lawyer for Rogers, did not return a telephone call and email from the AP on Thursday evening. The newspaper quoted Ingram as saying that Rogers' "version of events is much different" than the woman's.

No one answered a cellphone listed to Rogers and a phone number listed for Waffle House's headquarters rang unanswered.?

Your roof would offer the most necessary protection to your home against?environmental?conditions, such as-sun rays, rain, frost, snow and wind. Hence, the roof would suffer more ear and tear than other parts of your home.? Roof improvement and eventually maintenance is therefore a necessary part of home improvement.

Regardless of the material used in the roof, it would need regular maintenance and whenever you discover damage in it you may consult a roofing company without delay.? Some roofing company may also offer regular maintenance as a part of their roofing services.? Hence, you may ask the roofing company about their maintenance services. Anyway, following are the tips to help you maintain the roof of your home and ensure that it remains at the working condition.

Signs of damage: Depending on the material used for roofing, the roof can decay faster or slower. Check constantly for any sign of damage. Roof shingles are likely to suffer wear and tear with time. Damaged shingles would make your home prone to water?damages. During roof?installation?you can therefore use shingles with maximum longevity to minimize the hassle of regular inspection.

Discoloration: Another sign of damage is discoloration. Not only it would make the roof weak but would also lower the value of your property. Black steaks on your roof are an indication of fungus and algae attack. Longer they would stay, greater would be the damage caused by them. Roof replacement would become necessary if you spot fungus?damages?in your roof.

Trees: You mustn?t allow a tree to grow near your house. The branches of the tree and leaves are likely to cause heavy?damages?to the roof. If the leaves are allowed to decompose on the roof top, they can accelerate thedamages?from mold. Moreover, the branch can fall on the roof and cause severe damage during storms and high wind, which would call for immediate roof replacement. To avoid the expense a tree close to your building should therefore be removed. Your insurance company may also urge you to do the same.

Clear debris: Time to time, debris should be removed from the rooftop. This may need the service of a professional company. You may ask your?roof installation company?if they would offer the service of removing debris from the roof.

Water leakage: Rain and wind cause the maximum damage to your roof. Keep a check for water damage. The leak can grow if remains undetected and eventually cause greater damage. Most often a home insurance company wouldn?t cover?damagescaused by water leakage. Hence, it can be an incentive for you to keep check for water damage.

Depending on the material used for roofing, it may need more frequent maintenance. However, regular maintenance of the roof would also ensure saving in the long run. Discolored and damaged shingled would also lower the value of your property.

Iran issues warning after targeting U.S. drone

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran said it would deal decisively with any foreign encroachment into its airspace, an apparent warning to the United States after one of its surveillance drones was targeted by Iranian warplanes last week.

On Thursday U.S. officials said the unarmed Predator drone was in international airspace when Iranian warplanes opened fire on it on November 1. The aircraft was not hit.

The intercept was the first time Tehran had fired at an unmanned U.S. aircraft in their 33 year stand-off.

"The defenders of the Islamic Republic will respond decisively to any form of encroachment by air, sea or on the ground," Fars news agency quoted General Massoud Jazayeri, a senior armed forces commander, as saying on Friday.

"If any foreign aircraft attempts to enter our airspace our armed forces will deal with them," he said. Jazayeri did not mention the drone incident specifically.

According to the Pentagon, two Soviet-designed SU-25 aircraft intercepted the Predator drone over Gulf waters about 16 nautical miles off the Iranian coast. After firing at the drone they followed it for several miles as it moved farther away from Iranian airspace.

Washington has issued a formal protest to the Iranian authorities via diplomatic channels.

Details of the incident emerged ahead of large-scale air defense drills due to start across several provinces in eastern Iran this week.

The "Velayat 4" maneuvers will be jointly held by the regular armed forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and will involve testing new radar and surveillance equipment, military commanders say.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- An ingredient in green tea that helps reduce blood sugar spikes in mice may lead to new diet strategies for people, according to Penn State food scientists.

Mice fed an antioxidant found in green tea -- epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG -- and corn starch had a significant reduction in increase in their blood sugar -- blood glucose -- levels compared to mice that were not fed the compound, according to Joshua Lambert, assistant professor of food science in agricultural sciences.

"The spike in blood glucose level is about 50 percent lower than the increase in the blood glucose level of mice that were not fed EGCG," Lambert said.

The dose of EGCG fed to the mice was equivalent to about one and a half cups of green tea for a human.

Lambert, who worked with Sarah C. Forester, postdoctoral fellow, and Yeyi Gu, graduate student, both in food science, said EGCG was most effective when the compound was fed to the mice simultaneously with corn starch. For humans, this may mean that green tea could help them control the typical blood sugar increases that are brought on when they eat starchy foods, like breads and bagels that are often a part of typical breakfasts.

"If what you are eating with your tea has starch in it then you might see that beneficial effect," Lambert said. "So, for example, if you have green tea with your bagel for breakfast, it may reduce the spike in blood glucose levels that you would normally get from that food."

The EGCG had no significant effect on blood sugar spikes in mice that were fed glucose or maltose, according to the researchers who released their findings in the online version of Molecular Nutrition and Food Research. Lambert said that the reason blood sugar spikes are reduced when the mice ate starch, but not these sugars, may be related to the way the body converts starch into sugar.

An enzyme called alpha-amylase that is produced in both the mouth and by the pancreas helps break down starch into maltose and glucose. EGCG may inhibit the enzymes ability to break down the starch, the researchers indicated, since they also found that EGCG reduced the activity of alpha amylase in the pancreas by 34 percent.

If the mechanism holds in humans, this may mean that people who want to limit the blood sugar spike should skip adding sugar to their cup of green tea.

"That may mean that if you add sugar into your green tea, that might negate the effect that the green tea will have on limiting the rise in blood glucose level," Lambert said.

Lambert added that the green tea and the starch would need to be consumed simultaneously. For example, drinking a cup of tea well after eating a piece of toast would probably not change the blood sugar spike.

For the study, researchers separated mice into several groups based on body weight. After a fasting period, the mice were given common corn starch, maltose, or sucrose. One group of mice received EGCG along with the feed, while a control group was not fed the compound.

The researchers then tested the blood sugar levels of both groups.

Lambert said the researchers next step is to test the compound on people.

"The relatively low effective dose of EGCG makes a compelling case for studies in human subjects," the researchers said.

What Movies Don't Know About Injury Lawsuits - Legal Blog Network ...

It's no surprise that Hollywood loves legal stories -- after all, criminal cases and injury lawsuits make for good drama. What they don't seem to love, however, is realism.

There are some great movies based on important personal injury suits, including "Erin Brockovich," "Philadelphia," "A Civil Action," and "Class Action." But they don't necessarily give a practical picture of what a personal injury suit actually entails.

That's unfortunate, because a personal injury lawsuit is often the best way to get compensation when others violate your legal rights. So here, we attempt to dispel five movie myths and set the record straight.

Popular German Alpine folk band fakes music: producer

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German-language folk group famed for their Alpine brass band sound and cheerful style have been faking the music on their albums for years and should give back their 13 German music awards, their former producer said on Wednesday.

But the manager of the seven-man "Kastelruther Spatzen" said it was common practice for folk music bands to use studio musicians for their albums, adding that the band from the Italian Alpine region of South Tyrol had even listed studio musicians' names on albums.

"The success of this band is based on a giant fraud," ex producer Walter Widemair told Bild newspaper, saying that only the lead singer's voice was genuine on the albums.

"The band of fakes must give back their Echo awards," he added, referring to Germany's most prestigious music award the band known for its tight leather trousers and kitschy style won 13 times.

In a statement on the website www.kastelrutherspatzen.de, manager Helmut Brossmann said Widemair had been responsible for the studio recordings for nearly 30 years and was now betraying the band for commercial reasons -- to help promote his own book.

"The names of the studio musician and everyone who contributed to the chorus of songs was mentioned in every CD that they were involved in," said Brossmann. "In nearly 30 years of concert tours, they always played and sang everything live."

The dispute has captured the attention of boulevard newspapers in Germany and recalled a scandal surrounding the Milli Vanilli lip-synching duo of the early 1990s.

German producer Frank Farian turned two young Munich models, Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, into the group known as Milli Vanilli.

They won a Grammy Award in 1990 that was later stripped away when it emerged that they were only lip synching songs performed by others.

Democrats expand Senate grip but fail to win House

Democrats strengthened their hold on the Senate but failed Tuesday to recapture the majority in the House of Representatives they lost two years ago. President Barack Obama, in his freshly authorized second term, will face the same divided Congress in 2013 that has bedeviled efforts to enact his major legislation.

"Now that the election is over, it's time to put politics aside and work together to find solutions," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who may have a slightly bigger working majority ? but not as big as the filibuster-proof one Obama enjoyed his first two years in the White House.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who also gets to keep his job, offered to work with any willing partner, Republican or Democrat, to get things done. "The American people want solutions ? and tonight, they've responded by renewing our majority," he told a gathering of Republicans.

But Boehner also said that by keeping Republicans in control of the House, voters made clear there is no mandate for raising taxes. Obama has proposed imposing higher taxes on households earning over $250,000 a year.

The first post-election test of wills could start next week when Congress returns from its election recess to deal with unfinished business ? including a looming "fiscal cliff" of $400 billion in higher taxes and $100 billion in automatic cuts in military and domestic spending to take effect in January if Congress doesn't head them off. Economists warn that the combination could plunge the nation back into a recession.

Because of extreme election-year partisanship, a resolution of the matter had been put off until a post-election lame-duck session.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said the voters have not endorsed the "failures or excesses of the president's first term," but rather have given him more time to finish the job.

"To the extent he wants to move to the political center, which is where the work gets done in a divided government, we'll be there to meet him halfway," McConnell said.

Sen.-elect Tim Kaine of Virginia said Wednesday he believes Democrats and Republicans will come together to avoid the "fiscal cliff" threatening the country at year's end.

Kaine, the former governor of Virginia who defeated Republican George Allen Tuesday night, said in an appearance on NBC's "Today" show that voters sent a message to Washington that they want "cooperative government." But he also said the election results show that the public doesn't want "all the levers in one party's hands" on Capitol Hill.

Newly elected Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren said she will go to Washington believing there is a "lot of room for compromise" on what to do about the deficit and the impending fiscal crisis.

Warren, a leading consumer advocate, told NBC that Congress can find a middle ground on the nation's financial problems that would bring down the deficit by cutting spending while raising revenues.

Speaking on "CBS This Morning," she said that those who voted for her opponent, Sen. Scott Brown, sent a message that people want lawmakers to work together and "I heard that loud and clear."

Democrats now hold a 53 to 47 majority, including two independents who generally vote with them. On Tuesday, they held their majority, picking up Republican-held seats in Indiana and Massachusetts while Republicans snatched a lone Democratic seat in Nebraska.

In Maine, independent former Gov. Angus King was elected to succeed retiring GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe. He hasn't said yet which party he will side with ? but Democrats rushed to his cause during his campaign. And after Tuesday's victory, Senate Democratic leader Reid reached out to him by phone.

In another Democratic pickup, Rep. Joe Donnelly won the Indiana Senate seat held for six terms by Republican Sen. Richard Lugar. Lugar lost earlier this year in a GOP primary to tea party-backed state Treasurer Richard Mourdock. The race had been rocked by the Republican candidate's controversial comments that pregnancy resulting from rape is "something God intended."

And Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., fought back a challenge from Republican Rep. Todd Akin, who severely damaged his candidacy in August when he said women who are victims of "legitimate rape" would not get pregnant.

The Virginia seat that Kaine won opened up when Sen. Jim Webb, a Democrat, decided not to run for re-election.

And former World Wrestling Entertainment executive Linda McMahon lost her bid for a Connecticut Senate seat to Democrat Chris Murphy despite spending $42 million of her own wealth. It was the second time in two years she has lost a Senate race. The seat had been long held by Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent who caucused with Democrats and was the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2000.

In Wisconsin, Rep. Tammy Baldwin defeated former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson.

In the House, both Boehner and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California were re-elected, as were other top leaders of both parties, including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., and the No. 2 House Democrat, Steny Hoyer of Maryland.

And while GOP Rep. Paul Ryan lost the vice presidency, he did win another term to his Wisconsin House seat.

Former GOP presidential hopeful Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota was narrowly re-elected.

A party needs 218 seats to control the House. The party mix in the new House will resemble the current one, which Republicans control by 240-190. There are two GOP and three Democratic vacancies. The GOP and Democratic pickups were pretty generally divided.

By early Wednesday, Democrats had defeated 12 GOP House incumbents ? 10 of them members of the huge tea party-backed freshman class of 2010. Republican losers included four incumbents from Illinois, two each from New Hampshire and New York, and one apiece from Florida, Maryland, Minnesota and Texas.

But Republicans picked up nine previously Democratic seats. Their candidates defeated one Democratic incumbent apiece in Kentucky, New York, North Carolina and Pennsylvania; they picked up one open seat each in Arkansas, California, Indiana, North Carolina and Oklahoma currently held by Democrats who retired or ran for another office.

With almost 90 percent of the 435 House races called by The Associated Press, Republicans had won 227 seats and were leading in nine more. For a majority in the chamber, a party must control 218 seats. Democrats had won 178 seats and were leading in 19 others.

In remarks to Democrats, Pelosi said her party would be "fighting for reigniting the American dream, building ladders of opportunity for people who want to work hard and play by the rules and take responsibility."

In a somber statement, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Republicans "have a period of reflection and recalibration ahead." He added that, "While some will want to blame one wing of the party over the other, the reality is candidates from all corners of our GOP lost tonight."
