The Five Dimensions of Learning
By Tom Russell
Recognizing the niche of a nugget of information helps us unfold its power and benefits. Flexibility plays the foremost role. The happy person moves with ease and competence through various dimensions of learning.
Dimension One: After those first vital years at our mother?s knee, we begin with reading, writing, math, geography, music, etc. Stories and myths have long been the primary teaching tool to nourish the minds of children. The art of storytelling enjoys a powerful revival today.
Dimension Two: This is the stage of RESPONSIBILITY. We learn a trade, a profession, or start a business to become self-supporting. Perhaps we revisit this stage later in life to start a new career, or attend conferences, or read relevant books and newsletters to expand our competence in our chosen line of work. It is deeply satisfying to have a conscious aim for excellence in your chosen field, and to strive for its expression.
Dimension Three: This is the domain of SELF-IMPROVEMENT. So many good contributions exist in this area, including the study of efficiency, setting goals and aims, leadership skills and creativity. Notice that I?m not referring to ?positive thinking? here, but to realistic improvement in our skills for interacting with the world. An appreciation of the principles of health and vitality enter this category as well. Musical arts may well be the most powerful self-improvement activity one could engage in, and it?s never too late to learn.
Dimension Four: This is the domain of PRACTICAL SPIRITUALITY, and the transformation of your day into a university for wisdom and insight. Though many good books have been written for Dimension Four, my experience is that Vernon Howard, on the whole, sets the standard here. His books are encyclopedias of crystal clear information on how to unfold your awareness in the midst of daily life. However, Vernon Howard himself encouraged people to read widely, taking in many authors and distilling the very best practices and principles.
One often overlooked level of Dimension Four is fiction, including stories like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Bram Stoker?s Dracula, the movie The Matrix, as just three examples out of hundreds. Well written fiction can reach deep into the Heart. It paints pictures that guide and energize. even after we have forgotten about them. Factual spiritual books have their place, but classic poetry, myth, short story and novels, strikes that deep story chord we remember as children. Great literature trumps, in its inner change potential, 99% of the so-called ?spiritual growth? books published today. The creative arts, including architecture, dance, theater and music, dwell in this level as well. Notice how music inhabits multiple levels. Yes indeed, buildings like the Gothic Cathedrals and the Egyptian Pyramids convey vast quantities of symbolic energy.
Dimension Five: This is the domain of Oneness, Wholeness, life without names and borders. It passes unannounced through the Heart. It stays for awhile, then gently recedes into the background. Yet, the more it finds us the more we slightly sense its presence in the background, even while engaged in other levels. The problem is, people get stuck here. They have a taste of Dimension Five, then become obsessed with making it permanent.
This next statement holds great power and relief: The aim of spiritual growth is flexibility and ease of movement throughout the dimensions, and NOT making Dimension Five some super-permanent dwelling. Such misconceptions are a ticket to endless frustration and shrinking wallets, and many have purchased it! We approach Dimension Five by a willingness to set aside all we think we?ve learned, all we think we know. The doorway is suspension (doubt if you will), not certainty of what to do and what to think.
Conclusion
Synergy swirls between the Dimensions. For example, increased efficiency on Three enriches your energy levels, helping to nourish efforts on Four. Skillful efforts on Four open us up to NOW, increasing the depth and frequency of the higher glimpses of Five. Remember, NOW is not a destination, but a doorway, beckoning us to Dimension Five when even a minute or two presents itself unclaimed.
Regarding spiritual growth, two distinct approaches present their invitations. One approach is to find an expert who is going to give you the answers. The other approach is that of a scientist, one who is going to weigh and test and consider, taking her own notes as she honors original discovery and direct perception. It is vital to oil our flexibility, detect and sidestep rigidity, and increase our receptivity to the very best information arising in these Dimensions. It?s also important at times to just go play, setting all of this aside for awhile.
What do you think? Let?s talk about these five levels in the upcoming Tele-class/Webcast this Saturday, August 4th. (See connection link above.)
